Try starting out by flapping the lips (like a horse sound) to help you relax the lips.

Try this in the mirror so you can see what you are doing. Work on making the aperture smaller/narrower as you are flapping, which will make the "pitch" go up until you are finally getting a good buzz going.

Most of the buzzing I do is from low C and down. This is to help me stay relaxed and to make sure I am not developing any tension or bad habits.

It is also great for keeping blood flowing through the chops during and after practice.

buzzing is at times a little controversial- some say do it alot, some say never and some say a little. My own experience has been that a little goes a long way- a little more for mouthpiece buzzing, but again you can do too much in a regular routine. It can cost you some range in the long run- just my experience.

My range and endurance has increased significantly with lip buzzing. When you adjust your emboucher such that you stimulate your muscles and can buzz a good steady controlled buzz and can adjust your pitch. You will realize that your muscles will burn much more that if you buzz on your mouthpiece. The mp cups your lips and supports your emboucher so without it, your are really working out your facial muscles. Good luck.

Hello
DePaul Univ. In Chicago , IL is where my former teacher taught Trumpet.
He stressed the importance of lip buzzing . He would demonstrate this by going to a piano and playing a note within the staff and form his embrochure position and "buzz" out the note. He would play different notes using this technique and even do octave slurs. He said this exercise should only be done fot 5-15 minutes daily with rests. He also said this would strengthen embrochure muscles to which the result would be a more centered aperture. I explained this the best way I could. I am sure it will help someone as it has helped me !

Thanks. We need to pay more attention lip buzzing, not just mouthpiece buzzing.

Placing my index fingers against my top lip two teeth away from the center of the mouth and then buzzing gives me the 'feel' I want when I play.

I'm not going to get into the buzzing controversy but just say, my H.S./university trumpet mentor studied with Renold Schilke and was good friends with Mendez, and did no buzzing, save the buzz to mouthpiece to horn introductory lessons.

I recently had dental implant surgery (one front tooth), following a construction-related accident.

My "come-back therapy" employed a modified system of buzzing.

It helps.

That's right, if you remove the instrument from the mouthpiece there is usually only air or a weak buzz on some unrelated pitch. Unless you force the sound with more embouchure and air effort. That is a road to inefficient playing and an inferior tone.

Advanced players can use playing the mouthpiece as a strengthening activity. In that case play the first resonance. It's about a Blat above the staff more or less, depending on the mouthpiece.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.
