Because everyone loves lists--

How about a list of companies you have dealt with that have the most fantastic customer service, consistently go out of their way to help, etc.? Be picky, not everyone gets on my list.

Karl Hammond
Edwards/Getzen
Osmun Music
Washington Music Center
Kanstul

J.W. Pepper
A.K. Brass Press

I haven't made a purchase yet, but I'm gobsmacked by the care and personal attention I've received from Harrison Wedge Mouthpieces.

Karl Hammond
Charlie Melk
Brett Getzen
Doug Meeuwsen

Cascio Interstate Music. They have a huge web store and also a local store. I can email them, ask them to have something brought to the store, and I pick it up (they clearly don't stock everything at the store). I've also gotten good help there. I try to get what I need from them whenever I can.

Based on 30 plus years in the trade as a repair tech and in no particular order:

Bob Reeves. Great mouthpieces, great advice and the dryest wit in Hollywood. He knows more about what makes a horn tick than anybody I know and is a mine of useful info.

Roy Lawler. I've owned several of his horns and still have two I really like. All super nice build quality and great players. More than that Roy is absolutely committed to customer satisfaction and will go far out of his way to make sure you're happy with his instruments.

Getzen. The best of the best in mass produced horns. Really nice people who really care about their company. Easy to get parts from, easy to work with and consistently good product.

Kanstul. These guys can build just about anything and their horns (regardless of the brand name stamped on the bell) are well made, play good and hold up like tanks. Easy to get parts and great advice on repair issues as well.

Schilke. I have owned many Schilke instruments over the years and can't find a bad one. That's saying something in this era of quality control issues and outsourced labor. I was not too worried when they changed hands since the buyers also have a good reputation and the horns coming out now are if anything better than ever. Lots of help when specialized problems come up.

There are a lot of really good people in our world. These are the ones that came to mind immediately and I'll probably add to the list as time passes.

1. Jason Harrelson
2. Michael Del Quadro (DQ Horns, AKA KansasTrumpet)
3. Garry Stoner

I requested the same three things of all three. I don't care how long it takes. I don't care what it looks like. I want it to play as well as your skills can make it play.

All three DID care what it looked like, and turned out beautifully crafted well finished instruments, even though looks are way down on my list of priorities.

All three produced instruments that will challenge my abilities for decades to come, so I never have hardware to blame for what comes out of the bell.

The last time I visited them with my colleagues, they only wanted to let us try instruments if we promished to buy one. My colleague was really interested in buying one but after we heard this BS, we left the shop immediately!

Schilke replaced all three valves in my horn of which i'm not even the original owner. I sent it in cause the third was sticking and they said they weren't happy with any of the three and replaced everything. A $500 job for free. He said he wanted Schilke owners to be proud of their horns.

So they are fantastic.
