My brother turns 50 on 12-12 so I decided to see what jazz was hot in 1959 and get him a few cds. Plenty to choose from….
Miles Davis: Kind of Blue (Columbia)
John Coltrane: Giant Steps (Atlantic)
The Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Out (Columbia)
Ornette Coleman: The Shape of Jazz to Come (Atlantic)
Bill Evans Trio: Portrait in Jazz (Riverside)
Charles Mingus: Mingus Ah Um (Columbia)
Duke Ellington: Anatomy of a Murder (Columbia)
Horace Silver: Blowin' the Blues Away (Blue Note)
Ella Fitzgerald: Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book (Verve)
Miles Davis: Sketches of Spain (Columbia) started recording in 59 but released in 60
He ended up getting the Duke Ellington, Horace Silver and Mingus. I know he has Kind of Blue, Giant Steps, Time Out and Sketches of Spain. What a year for jazz. My 50th is next year so I will have to do my homework and give him a few suggestions!
