Does anyone have any information on a Reynolds Hi Fi model cornet? There is not much information at the Contempora Corner site, other than the cornet has a large (.462) bore and was designed as an intermediate model. There is one in excellent original condition selling for $120 (asking price) about 90 miles from where I live. Before I make the trip with today's gas prices, I would appreciate any feedback from posters who have played this instrument. Thank you.
Sincerely

I believe the Hi-Fi was basically a Contempora with a brass bell (and no tone ring). At that price, it's probably worth the trip... |

I have two similar horns - a medium bore Reynolds Professional and a large bore Reynolds Argenta. They are both great horns. The professional practically plays itself. Definitely worth the trip. Mike _________________ 1950s Conn 80A. Wick 4. |

Thanks for the replies. I will try to see (buy?) the horn in the next couple of days. As much as I enjoy playing my 1951 New York Bach ML cornet, I sometimes wish the "blow" was a little more open when I am playing in the section in concert band. Maybe the Hi Fi with its large bore will give me what I am looking for. I imagine it sounds good, too...

I owned one of those for about a year and a half. They are good playing horns. I wish I still had mine. If that horn is in good condition, it will be worth the trip. _________________ Gill |

Alas, I waited too long and the cornet was sold. I should have figured the horn was worth at least the $120 asking price. Oh well...

Here, take a look at this one . . . I hope the valves aren't too worn. I'm guessing that it's either a winner or a diamond in the rough.
Whaddya think?
Oh, I'm the one who won the auction. _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

You can't hardly go wrong for $60. It looks pretty good in the pictures for that price. Let us know what you think of it after you've played it a little. _________________ "Brass bands are all very well in their place - outdoors and several miles away ." - Sir Thomas Beecham |

Cr@p!!! That looks to have the same slide/wrap configuration as my Onyx that I have been desperate to find affordable replacement valves for. If it turns out to be a dud, but with decent valves... PM me! _________________ "Stomvi" PhrankenPhlugel w/ Blessing copper bell

I hope I'm not wrong, but I have a feeling this just might be a nice little player.

Getting a valve job ain't cheap (as most of us know) and if this horn doesn't need one, then it will be just the steal I was hoping for.

Well, it's a keeper. It plays great. It was hard to see in the photo how badly the bell was bent down or the little crumple in the bell itself. And for $35.00 shipping, it was a truly pathetic packing job . . . a little newspaper around the case and nothing inside the case.
Plus, the mouthpiece is stuck in there. I gave him truthful although "neutral" feedback (I should have given him negative feedback). It was sent via Priority Mail, and that probably cost significantly less than $10.00, which I know from shipping many horns in the recent past.
I have a very good repairman who will make the dent issues virtually disappear, so I'm not worried about that.
And best of all . . . the valves are great, the pitch is excellent, the tone and response are outstanding. As I said, a keeper.
Since I'll probably spend another $65.00 in repair work, I won't gloat.
Not much. _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

At least the horn is in a case of some sort. A friend of mine got a trombone in the mail that just had some paper wrapped around it with NO packing material at all.

Well, I finally sent the horn to John Lynch down in FL, and just got it back. This horn is a remarkable little instrument thanks to John's expert repair work. John speculated that the denting happened a very long time ago (horn made in 1960) and the horn must not have been played after that. The valves are pretty much perfect, and the horn is just a joy to play.
I've got this gig in February with drummer Russ Wilson . . . it's a Paul Whiteman tribute concert (complete with original Whiteman charts and strings) and I'm playing the Bix Beiderbecke book. Although I have a few good cornets, now I have one that practically jumps up and plays itself. What a relief to know that my horn won't hold me back! _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

If that gets recorded for sale, please do share purchase info.

When my three digit Reynolds Cornet was shipped, it arrived with cardboard taped to the surface of the case and the handle left out so the postman could use it. Case arived completely split but the duct tape held. _________________ Gill |
