Fantastic. I don´t have any of his solo records, but he is on all the Mingus Big Band albums - he even plays lead on some of them! His solos are great - very original, well thought out, melodic. He also plays on Steve Swallow´s album "Deconstructed" - very good stuff. _________________ All the best

Ryan Kisor is one of the best modern jazz trumpeters playing today. When I was in high school, our jazz band played at the Morningside Jazz Festival. Ryan was a year younger than I, and he was unbelievable back then. Hearing him was a humbling experience, as it put my playing in perspective! |

I remember hearing a recording of Ryan Kisor about 10 years ago that was taking from a radio broadcast of a national Jazz trumpet solo competition. It was unbelievable. I think that Ryan was only 17 when he won it but what I thought was even more amazing was that he won over Tommy Williams who was playing the solo trumpet book for the US Army Jazz Ambassadors at the time. Tommy is an astounding player in his own right so that shows you what kind of player Ryan is. I haven't heard any of his recent work but with 10 years to mature, I'll bet that he is simply outstanding. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Dave,
Kisor played lead on the Mingus Big Band´s "Gunslinging Birds". Earl Gardner didn´t play on that one. _________________ All the best

That's the one! I don't remember exactly what Ryan played. One of the tunes that he did was a standard like "Round Midnight" or "Stardust" and it was just unbelievable. The sound, range and power he was playing with was astounding and when I was told that he was only 17 I felt pretty danged inferior. But, he did pay his dues. I had a HS band director that graduated from Morningside in Iowa that knew him and said that he was doing Abersold stuff when he was in like 2nd grade, and was playing lead for his Dad's HS jazz band when he was in 6th or something silly like that.
I think that I'm going to see if I can find some recordings of him for inspiration. _________________ Patrick Gleason

Ryan is an absolute BEAST! I heard him with LCJO at Wolf Trap a few months ago and he played the lead on "Night in Tunisa". Knocked me out!
Let me recommend the following recordings:
Point of Arrival
Power Source (fantastic)
The Usual Suspects
Battle Cry
None of the above titles disappoint. I got 'em all and they stay in the CD changer. |
