Nate, I use something very small and tight on the WT.
Like a loose 30 throat (30=.1285" 29=.136" I'm right at .132")
Same on the Yamaha 8335RGS.
RE: Rat Pack show.
*I* am the trumpet section. Lead, solo and everything in between.
Just as my Bone Buddy Rich Lewis *IS* the trombone section.
Budget cuts in the music world, you know:(
We've had to practically rewrite and revoice the book to make it sound "somewhat" normal.
The producer and contractor have been very supportive in our rewriting efforts. I almost didn't take the show because they were using the 12 horn book with only 4 horns. I've played various Rat Pack shows with as few as 3 horns. Believe me- THAT sounds horrible when played as written(and usually hurts like a sob)
For those of you unfamiliar with the cut down horn sections- They usually leave the lead trumpet part like on the recording, then use one bone and maybe two reeds w/doubles. If they stick with standard Basie voicings, it's not too bad although the lead trpt is about a 10th to an octave above the next voice down. It just sounds weird, and talk about exposed!
If the arranger goes with more "modern" voicings, lead trpt is like the recording and the next voice down is a 10th or so below you but on some weird chord extension like the +9 or raised 13th. Talk about voice leading from Pluto!
As it now stands, it's fairly palatable with the changes we've made, and some spots sound darn good, but the big shouts sound pretty thin. And we're pretty much playing all the time...still more re-voicing to do.
It'll be good for my chops and concentration.
gotta run-opening night!

Froggy & Mark C.,
I played my Bach/Larson "S" pipe Eb exclusively this morning on a "commercial orchestra" church gig using the short-shank 1.5C Hitman and was very comfortable with the response and intonation. I did not play higher than d concert above the staff, but everything lined up pretty well for me. Maybe a short-shank 1.5M would be the ticket.... |
