Hi,
I am currently looking for a new horn for lead playing for swing era music, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa etc. I enjoy the small bore of the Conn 22B that that I currently play and the bright sound of it. Any recommendations for a bright small bore modern horn would be appreciated.

You might consider the Yamaha Bobby Shew. 5" bell with .445 bore. MSRP is around $2,500. Available several places including here: https://www.wwbw.com/Yamaha-YTR-8310ZII-Bobby-Shew-Custom-Series-Bb-Trumpet-L49534.wwbw

I like medium to medium large bores too. I have been looking at a schilke b4, b6 or b7 which has a similar bore size to my Getzen.

The Jupiter XO is a medium bore horn. I’ve played a few. Nice horn that can really sizzle when you need it to. It’s on the bright side but worked well for big band lead. Used ones are rather affordable.

Selmer K-mod lightweight will meet the requirement.
Another good swing era lead horn is the Connstellation.
Newer offering would be a Bach 43 lightweight, IMO.

I like the Adams horns. Try the A5, like a Schilke B6 . . . or A6, like a Constellation.

Kanstul 990 and/or 991, which were the company's takes on the Conn 36B and 38B, respectively. My 991 feels nimbler than the 38Bs I've had occasion to try, and it's certainly at least a few ounces lighter. Like a 38B, it sport the .439" bore, the wide wrap, the 5 1/4" bell, and point-to-point bracing. It also has a copper leadpipe and the oldest examples are just 20 years old or so, whereas the good Connstellations are now pushing 60.

As your go-to Lead instrument?

OP - as an afterthought, you might check with zaferis regarding what he and his section mates played on classic swing. He's former Air Force and swing, especially Glenn Miller is part of their stock and trade.

I don't know of any modern small bore horns. I think most players who like small bores, play the Conn's.

I think any generation of the Yamaha Shew Z horn would be good. With a medium bore, yellow brass bell, and right MP, I think its tough to beat.

The Schilke B6 and B7 as you mentioned would also be a good choice. The B6 does feature a copper bell which some players associate that with a more softer sound and I can say that if I want a softer sound, it's beautiful. However, with the right MP you can brighten up just about any horn and the B6 can and would be a great lead horn.

The B7 would probably match up well with the Shew Z horn.

If you are looking for an authentic sound of the era, then you are going to have trouble finding a modern horn other than from a custom maker. Quite literally, "they don't make 'em like that anymore".

If you are looking for a modern sound, then I would echo "Schilke".

Yes, but what Schilke? There are a lot of choices.

FWIW, I've had a Schilke B-7 and it's a great horn, but it would not be my go-to horn for big band lead work.

The new Bach such as the Apollo and the 19037m and 19072x sound really great for lead playing.

Are you looking for new because your Conn 22B is worn out? It would be much cheaper to just get a valve job than it would be to buy any new trumpet of comparable quality.

The best modern choices are.

Jupiter 1600i, Roger Ingram's design. He's as good as it gets and knows what a lead trumpet has to do.

Schilke S42, S33HC, S43HD. and the incredible S43HDL-F, the Faddis model.

You could seek out a Schilke B4 and if copper bells don't screw up your natural sound like they do me, the B6.

The Bobby Shew model might work well, too.

Lead player in the Big Band I play in just bought the latest gen Bobby Shew, and he sounded fantastic on it at our last gig, which was a classic swing gig.

He's a pretty good player, but he sounded better on the Shew than on his previous horn, and it suited the music quite well. Not sure what mpc. he was using...

Cheers,
Roger
