I agree with chuck in ny. Challenge accompanies trumpet, flugel, cornet, and everything else I play. If it was easy it wouldn't be as appealing, IMO. And it is 80% (or likely more) about sound for the brass, whereas for piano and vibes where the instrument makes the sound (although one certainly massages it), one's attention turns to technique. _________________ veery715

Thank you, veery715 for your kind mention of my playing. I was interested in this thread but would not have nominated myself to stand in such fabulous company.
I do play flugelhorn because I want to, and all the other instruments because I need to. Much, however, depends on the style of music. I am fortunate to be at a place in my life where I only play the music I want to, mostly my own. Of course, like all of you, for church or legit jobs I have the standard Bb and C and piccolo trumpets. For fusion jazz, I play the soprano sax. For ballads and authentic Brazilian sambas, I play flute. But the horn I go to, if I can, is always the flugel and has been since the 1960s. It's the sound I want. _________________ Matt Finley https://mattfinley.bandcamp.com/releases

I used to think of Guido Basso as pretty much only a flugel player. Then I heard him play the trumpet... _________________ Richard Sandals

Yes, there was another thread where someone posted a skit - a trumpet shoot-out on the Johnny Cash show, with some excellent playing by Guido Basso and Al Hirt. _________________ Matt Finley https://mattfinley.bandcamp.com/releases

After touting Matt FInley in an earlier post, I figured I should put my money where my e-mouth is, so I ordered his CD, Brazilian Wish.
All I can say is WOW! Great playing and compositions, very tight and well engineered. Buy it y'all!

Roy Hargrove is my choice and yes "Moment to moment" is seductive with that awesome flugel. Check out Till Bronner he to uses a flugel like Roy! |
