I stumbled upon this website with instrument photos, as well as a custom Monette Cornet that slightly resembles a Lawler. The person says it's a custom Cornet like the one Wynton used on Carnaval. http://picasaweb.google.com/RajaTrumpet/CustomMonetteCornet#5014487872322665858 _________________ Trumpet: Bach 37 (Pre-strike)

This is from his website. http://www.wyntonmarsalis.org/forum/read.php?2,1134 It says "Bach...right out of the case.....my buddy was the 1st trpt at Eastman...said Wynton had to "bang the valves " to get it to work.." _________________ Besson Sovereign 924R Eb Cornet - Stork 3SC

I'd say, in addition to not being a strong speller, this person probably has no idea what they're talking about. _________________ My site | Jerseyband |

I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure I remember John Hagstrom saying that it was a custom schilke that arrived just a few days before the recording sessions. |

According to his wesite he has a Monette 900 Series Decorated Cornet in C. But doesn't say if he used it on Carnaval. _________________ Besson Sovereign 924R Eb Cornet - Stork 3SC

Wynton's Carnaval CD itself says it was recorded on a Bach 184. Also, it was recorded in ... 1987 (correct?). I don't know exactly when Dave started building cornets, but I think it was around the early 90's. I went to a summer MN orchestra concert in 1994 and Manny was using one on the Carnival of Venice. I think I remember him saying it was a recent creation, but I could be wrong on that.
I'm not sure what the date "1999" on the custom Monette cornet means.
I think there's a pretty strong consensus that the custom cornet in question was not used on the recording. It's likely that Wynton has acquired one in the time since then. _________________ LA Benge 3X Bb Trumpet

Guys. Wynton did not play his Monette cornet on the Carvaval album. He used a Bach 184.
He got his Monette cornet much later and used it on the Mr. Jelly Lord album, and maybe on A Fiddler's Tale. _________________ The name I go by in the real world is Joe Lewis |

I notice that site has a number of errors.
Louis Amstrong did not play trumpet on his hot fives and hot sevens recordings. I have a copy of a letter he wrote to Max Jones explaining that he switched to trumpet when he went to play with Erskine Tate's orchestra in December 1925.
From Louis himself:
"I changed from cornet to trumpet while I was with Erskine Tate at the Vendome, Jimmy Tate (Erskine's brother) played trumpet, and they figured that it would be better if I did too."
Short of any further evidence we have to take the man at his word! _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced

Wynton used a Bach 184 on the Carnival album. I remember a discussion about this a LONG time ago, and if I am correct, the horn Wynton used was borrowed from Wilmer Wise.
Perhaps Wilmer will make a cameo to confirm, if he even still lurks here. |

Definitely a Bach.
Incidentally, Hakan Hardenberger played a B&H Sovereign originally, but switched to the Bach 184 for the recordings he did for Phillips (At the Beach etc).
Nothing wrong with the Bach cornet at all.
Valve action better than Yamaha to start with. _________________ Bb - Scherzer 8218W, Schilke S22, Bach 43, Selmer 19A Balanced
