I was playing my flugel earlier today thinking, "I could probably enjoy playing only the flugelhorn and not miss playing the trumpet, or at least not much."

Then I got to thinking what pros (or any of you semi-pros or recreational players in here) play the flugel as their main or sole axe, and rarely or never play their trumpet?

Only 2 pros came to my mind:

Art Farmer (save for his "flumpet"?)

Chuck Mangione

Can you think of any more?

And, do any of you fit this description?

I think this is just a phase I'm going through right now because I'm just really digging the flugelhorn, and I could get away with just playing the flugel with the small jazz combo I play with once a month.

Not "famous", but here in NYC Richard Lee plays a flugel exclusively. I don't know any of his websites/links offhand, but you can probably do a search for him. Another thing I like about him is that like me, he uses effects on his horn

Oh, funny aside, he was thinking of selling his flugel, and I was thinking of buying it, but when I played it, he said "goddamn! This flugel sounds amazing!" and refused to sell it to me.

Not absolutely exclusively, but Gerard Presencer in the UK. Alex Sipiagin does a lot on the floogel too. Both killer players.

Although he also plays trumpet, Guido Basso is known for having the most gorgeous, velvety flugel sound ever!

You can add Ack Van Rooyen.

I personnaly don't like his sound very much because it's too bright for me, but he's a fantastic flugel player!

I know what you mean. I love playing flugelhorn very much. I really love Roy Hargrove's flugel sound.

Roy Hargrove's flugel sound is incredible!

I'm a huge fan of Hargrove, specially on flugel.

I love as well Stéphane Belmondo's huge dark sound, Tom Harrell's more classical flugel sound very sweet and round, but Hargrove is really a special case!
Often tried to imitate his flugel sound... never succeeded at all!!!

I think this guy is a martian...

Red Rodney played flugelhorn almost exclusively in his latter years, even in the "trumpet section" of Slide Hampton's band.

Pete Minger, great trumpeter who played with Basie, was a monster flugelhornist. Here's a vid of him, starts around 3:19. Also with Ira Sullivan and John Bailey.

Okay... I'm pretty sure the Mullet never worked for anyone, but for some people (5:10), the mullet hairdo *REALLY* doesn't work.

Nice tootlin' though! The flugel solo is faster and sometimes higher than I think flugels were meant to be played (I prefer them for more lyrical stuff), but you can't deny the talent. When you start ripping through notes too fast or high to hear the velvet, it might as well be a cornet IMHO. Again... great playing, though!

Thad Jones.
Highly under rated as a player, outstanding composer as well.

the flugel is seductive and i play it more than the trumpet. the problem is that beautiful sound in general resides in the trumpet and it has more flexibility in its way. it's a hard instrument to walk away from. i tried being a flugel only player and just couldn't do it.
both instruments throw down the gauntlet and challenge you to get the right sound out of them. how do you back away from something like that?

One of our co-THers, Matt Finley, focuses on flugel. Check out RioJazz: http://www.riojazz.com/. He gets a gorgeous sound.
