CSO / Barenboim: Mahler 9 | London (UK) | Orchestral | JackD |
Gustav Mahler Symphony No.9
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Daniel Barenboim conductor
The renowned Chicago Symphony Orchestra has always been linked with the world's greatest conductors. This pair (second performance on April 4th) of concerts offers an unmissable opportunity to hear it with two of the finest musicians of our time. Daniel Barenboim takes the helm for Mahler's great Ninth Symphony. Mahler believed that the Ninth Symphony would be his last, and he poured into its huge structure all the anguish of farewell, but also an unquenchable thirst for life. Echoes of his favourite Austrian folk dances and a mocking parody of a Scherzo give way finally to a glorious, lyrical Adagio of unsurpassed warmth and intensity, offering, in Bruno Walter's words, 'a vision of the radiance of Heaven'.

CSO / Boulez / Barenboim : Bartok | London (UK) | Orchestral | JackD |
Bela Bartok Four Orchestral Pieces
Bela Bartok Piano Concerto No.1
Bela Bartok Concerto for Orchestra
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Pierre Boulez conductor
Daniel Barenboim piano
Pierre Boulez takes over with Barenboim as soloist, in this all-Bartók programme. The Four Orchestral Pieces, written just after the opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle, deserve to be heard more often. The First Piano Concerto is an extrovert, 'out of doors' piece, coloured by lots of wind and percussion, as well as by Bartók's hallmark folk idioms. The brilliant Concerto for Orchestra, Bartók's most popular piece, sparkles with wit, verve, and tongue-in cheek irony.

Conductor: Peter Maxwell Davis
Soloist: Hakan Hardenberger, trumpet
Peter Maxwell Davies: Mavis in Las Vegas
Peter Maxwell Davies: Trumpet Concerto
Peter Maxwell Davies: Symphony No.8 (Antarctic)
'Maxwell Davies' music has always been strongly rooted in a sense of place. The three works performed here evocatively depict the gaudiness of Las Vegas, the wind, sea and birdcalls of Orkney and the icebergs and snowscapes of the Antarctic. Hakan Hardenberger, soloist in Max's Trumpet Concerto, is one of the world's leading trumpeters, and is renowned not only for his supreme virtuosity but for his commitment to the performance of contemporary works.
