Using the Warburton backbore numbering system, where about would the standard Wick 4B cornet backbore fall? I have a couple Warburton BC and MBC tops and was wondering which backbore was closest to Wick's standard. Just looking for a good place to start from when comparing the Warburton tops because I'm pretty familiar with the Wicks.

I have no actual knowledge, but I would say that the Wick cornet backbores are very open. My guess would be around a Warburton 10 or 11, but of course, since the Wick cornet mouthpieces are not modular and you cannot therefore separate the backbore from the other components to ascertain which components are generating which playing characteristics (basically Wick cornet mouthpieces feel very open to me, which I attribute to the combination of a deep cup with a large cup volume, large throat and open backbore), it is difficult to be sure, and additionally, the difference in the other mouthpiece components between a Wick and Warburton cornet mouthpiece, may very well affect backbore choice, meaning that a very different backbore size on one, may be required to nearer replicate the blow resistance/playing characteristics of the other.

Hi Lou,

I suspected somewhere around a 10 based on my own observations. Glad to see I may be on the right track. Thanks!

Anyone else have any ideas about Wick cornet backbores?

Not based on measurements but based on having played both, I would agree that the Wick 4B feels very similar to Warburton #10 BB.
