I have Band in a Box, and it is great. It takes some time to punch in the chord changes, but once they are in, it is really cool. It is even better if yoiu hook your computer up so that the sound comes out through the speakers of a nice stereo. I use BIAB all of the time for fake book practice, and it seems to do the trick.

Yes.

Yes.
I don't use it that much, but I don't play much outside church (soooommmme day, my band, will cooommmme...) I'd suggest entering the chords and melody line. You can always turn off the melody, but it gives you a nice start for improving around the melody. (Ears still burning from the keyboard player asking me to improv "closer to the melody" during the very first couple of months of my comeback. Hmm... "comeback" -- as if!)

I use it every day... I have somewhere around 150 standards that I practice with... fun to do them in different keys, tempos and also fun to change backgrounds ( jazz to funk, etc.) or do a jazz waltz like Bluesette in 4/4... it makes you think and solo differently. |

The midi sound is dependent on your synthesizer; some instruments on certain synthesizers sound very good, some do not. The Roland software synthesizer (I think it comes with BB) is not bad and would probably serve your purposes well. If not, there are a variety of hardware synthesizers to audition. I would suggest joining the Band in a Box Forum within Yahoo Groups as there is a wealth of specific information there. _________________ Charlie Proctor

Is there a place for people to share BIAB songs, maybe the group you mentioned?

BAIB songs are really nothing more than a file that contains the chords. I don't know if anyone actually shares those files, however, Bob "Notes" Norton (Norton Music in Ft. Pierce, FL) sells Fake Books and/or Fake Disks. You can also get Fake Books from most music stores. It only takes 5 to 10 minutes to plug the chords into a song file. The Fake Disks come with all of that done for you as well as a "Style" selected for you. You need to have purchased most of the styles to make the process seamless, however it is easy to select an alternate style from what you have installed with the BIAB program. Bob Norton posts frequently on the Yahoo Group. _________________ Charlie Proctor

Does anyone know if bandora is a good alternative? https://bandora.com/en/ (AKA it's cheaper, but is that enough to choose it over BIAB?) |

I used BIAB a long time ago, but for the past few years iRealPro has completely taken its place for me. It's so convenient to have with me on my phone and tablet at all times.
I do think that BIAB sounds MUCH better, particularly if you have a good sound card setup or whatever and use their "RealBand" sounds. They really are superb. So if that's important to you, BIAB all the way. I believe that the "Learn Jazz Standards" website creator used BIAB for all their videos, and they sound really great, so have a listen there.
But if you want something very portable, lightweight, simple, and effective as a practice tool, then iRealPro is utterly superb. I use it quite literally every day. _________________ Yamaha 8310Z trumpet
