What's the best all around production/recording software in your opinion?

I'm not talking about notation software like Finale. I'm talking about software like Pro Tools.

Depends on your requirements and budget. IMHO:

Best features = a tossup between Cubase/Nuendo, Protools, and Logic.
Best value = Reaper
Best sounding = Paris
Best for performance = Ableton Live

There is no answer to this. It depends on way too many factors. I'm a Pro Tools user myself, but there is a LOT of good software out there. It also depends on what platform you use, Mac or PC. Many times it depends on what the main focus of your work is.

I'm mostly audio with little MIDI. ProTools is a great audio editor. Many people who do film scoring like Digital Performer for it's MIDI strengths and sampler. Logic is gaining more popularity by the day, but is Mac only now. I never like Cubase when I used it. The layout didn't flow right for me. That was 5 years ago too, so it might have changed.

If someone told me I couldn't use PT anymore, I would probably try Logic or Digital Performer on the Mac side or Sonar on the PC side.

If you're on the PC side of the fence, I'd take a serious look at Adobe Audition or Cakewalk Sonar.

Try Reaper out. It's free to try (no restrictions on usage as I recall). It does pretty much everything very well.

While I bought a Reaper license to support its development, I'm a Cubase/Sonar guy. I mostly work in Sonar these days.

Take a good hard look at Record.
http://www.propellerheads.se/

I've been at it four months now, and am ready to put away Logic (my main squeeze) and Ableton (my old Reason rewire buddy) for good.

The Reason/Record combo is the real deal.
Prepare to fall in love.

Maybe I should have provided some information on my intent.

I picked up a keyboard controller (axiom 61) and I'm interested in starting a low budget mini studio in my room. Just a keyboard, large diaphragm condenser mic, my laptop and some monitors/headphones.
I need software that would allow me to create some compositions/arrangements/beats with my laptop and then record vocals/trumpet over it. I'm interested mostly in creating Latin music, Hip-hop and realizing some jazz compositions.

Cost is important since I'm still a college student

I was considering this bundle from pro tools
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Digidesign-Pro-Tools-Mbox-Mini-Package?sku=702525

But I could probably get better quality parts if I bought separately. On top of that it's only pro-tools LE.

I like the reason + record idea, but it's too expensive to spend $500+ on software alone. At least for me.

I started with a home studio about a year ago and use Logic Studio. It's expensive, but really really intuitive, powerful, and easy to use.

I have been on Sonar for quite some time, does everything I want! I have used protools, logic, traction and a whole host of other stuff, most of it works well. Some will suit you better. Cubase LE is good but inexpensive!

I think this depends on how used you are to handling audio files.
I set up my own home studio and just used Audacity, which is free. I only have a single condenser microphone that goes into a USB socket on the computer.

Here is an example of the results (audio reduced to youtube standards obviously):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_3z4isUPPY

The main issue with Audacity is that a lot of the processes are not as automated as with other software, but the level of control is very high.

The Mbox is a decent little interface and the PT software you get with it is fine, but it is a VERY limited version of PT. Forget support for unlimited tracks and TDM plugins. Also, PT only works with M-Audio and Digidesign hardware, so that is limiting.

Unless you know that you are going to use multitrack i/o, you can do lots of composing and recording with the audio i/o you have on your computer right now with a program like Reaper. Also, with your Axiom controller, you can check out the KVRAudio site for tons of freeware synths. Since Reaper is uncrippled shareware, bundled with a sick number of plugins, you can basically get all your software for $0.

I think he's referring to the Ensoniq Paris, which is a proprietary hardware DAW. A lot of people consider it the best sounding DAW out there, but it's largely moot as they're no longer in production, are really hard to come by nowadays, and parts ore ridiculously difficult to find.

Fraserhutch is correct. Paris was developed by Ensoniq, then remarketed by Emu when the parent company (Creative Labs) took over Ensoniq. Long ago dead, except for a small band of faithful who have been writing drivers and plugin updates.

Saying it sounds the best is, of course, subjective, but I know that I can slam levels in Paris and get saturation, not digital clipping.

What software are people using now for multitrack recording? Any recommendations since this thread went dormant?

I'm still in favour of Record for multitrack recording. Paired with Reason and a handful of top quality refills, I'm good to go. Same interface behaviour with both Mac and PC. Record's mixer is beyond incredible.

Many people believe that Propellerhead's incompatibility with VSTs is a weakness, but for me, that weakness has kept my DAW crash-free since 2004.

Sounds like a good deal here. Nothing wrong with LE. I've done 5 records with it no problem. I also have that MXL mic and it's not a bad condenser.
Not a good trp mic though, unless you stand 10' away. It's hard to not overdrive condensers that have no pad.
Don't know anything about the moniters, but this bundle looks good to get you started.
You may see if they have something similar that's PT 9 since that is the current version and has a couple of features that are cool. I still use 8 no problem.
Also, if you're gonna run PT on your main computer, it's a good idea to have a seperate drive for your sessions and audio. I also have a third drive that all my samples are on.
