I really tried to stay out of this...

If you want to hear a sound clip of the Wild Thing as a Lead trumpet please just listen to this:

Dan McMillions Jazz Orchestra. These clips are from 'Got The Spirt'. He now has a new CD out called UP YOUR BRASS, I need to get some clips of that one up IMO there even better....

Al Chez also plays lead on a WT every night, as well as Mark Curry in Reno NV. There are many others as well......

Flip,

I'm glad to see you "didn't" stay out of this conversation! Dan has an excellent reputation, and many people can tune in to Letterman! The "control room" had the band mixed just right one night when Don Rickles was on as a guest. Al (Chez) played the Bull Fighters Song as Rickles walks on. Great sounding trpt!

Always amusing when some takes "pot-shots", blaming a horn, rather than saying something more like, "When 'I' played it the sound was blatty. I couldn't get a sound I liked." Hell that's happened to everyone.

Blaming the horn .. oh ... OK!

Hi,

In this case I think it was more like the person took pot shots without ever either playing or hearing a Wild Thing trumpet. There is no way that someone would say that who has actually played one and heard one played!

Here's what one poster said concerning last weekend's Trumpet Fest in Mobile, (with the link pasted first):

http://www.trumpetherald.com/forum/viewtopic.php?topic=12855&forum=15&1

"First, if you live in the Atlanta area and have never heard Tom Turner, shame on you. You need to make this happen. I played cornet exclusively for 7 years in a large band program, and have never heard that velvet a sound out of anyone else. Tom may give credit to the Wild Thing, but it sure didn't sound anything like he does when I tried it. (BTW, it is an incredible cornet, but when you play at my level, the horn can only do so much....) Special thanks to Tom and my apologies to everyone else for letting my son pretty much monopolize his WT flugel, it was love at first sight. The few brief moments I got to play it explains everything, though. I really like my Yamaha flugel, but is sure emphasizes the difference between a student line and a great pro model."

Another poster, reader and clinician wrote me a private e-mail stating:

" . . .I really enjoyed your "SOUND" on the horns. I have always felt
that tone is #1. You sound very velvet like and smooth on all your
instruments and then you can also generate much excitement!"
______________

There are SO MANY fine instruments out there today that could make great trumpets for lead, classical, whatever. (Most of those that are the very best were avaliable to try in the Mobile Horn Fest and Clinic from both vendors and participants)

The key is to find the instrument that is right for YOU . . . and we're all different!!!

If one must take advice from someone concerning a horn purchase without being able to play one . . . PLEASE TALK TO SOMEONE WITH EXPERIENCE at playing the horns you are interested in.

Better still . . . give 'em a "test drive" yourself!

If I can be of any further assistance to anyone, please drop me an e-mail.

Sincerely,

Tom Turner

The Olds Studio is a magnificent instrument for those specializing in upper register work.

They also have some of the fullest middle and low registers of any horn I've tried.

Hey, I'm just trying to help, here!

Hi Rich,

I really enjoyed playing all those fine vintage cornets and trumpets you brought to Mobile. There truly was a much greater difference in "sound" qualities back in the old days. It is remarkable to experience the ol' "tonal pallette!"

Warmest regards,

Tom

PS: I wish we'd had more time. I hardly got free to talk to you! Maybe next time I hope. Glad you got home safely.
