Hello, all.
I am very sad to report that David Mason passed away yesterday at age 85 after a brief battle with leukemia. David had been Principal Trumpet of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Covent Garden Opera, and the English Chamber Orchestra. Of course, he was also probably most renowned for recording the iconic piccolo trumpet solos on "Penny Lane."
David was a very warm, funny, generous, gracious man who was wonderfully hospitable to me on my trips to London. I last saw him last June, and he was full of life and excited as always to talk about his illustrious career. I will miss him.
The trumpet world has lost yet another of the greats. Thanks for everything, David!

I had the great honor of performing at the Texas Community Music Festival yesterday with Nate Mayfield as our guest soloist on the Eb solo cornet part of Flowerdale. Immediately beforehand he announced to those in attendance that he was dedicating his performance in honor of David Mason.
Flowerdale is a very moving lyrical piece and Nate did an outstanding job on it, hopefully it is some small comfort to Mr. Mason's friends and family. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

This is i believe is the most outstanding trumpet player in history. I remember him also due to his contribution to Beatles's songs A Day in the Life and Magical Mystery Tour

omg the legends are dropping like flies this year.
R.I.P. Mr. Mason and my condolences to his family.
I seem to remember hearing that the picc he used on the "Penny Lane" track is in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Museum.
