Hello all. I thought I would start an interesting thread. If you own a great playing strad, fell free to share the first couple digits of the serial # so we may get an idea of the era of when the horn was produced. This may give a more definitive idea of when Bach horns were more consistent. Likewise, you may give one that was a terrible strad. I'm not sure if it is legal or not to give the whole serial number, so please refrain from that. After a lot of posts I will do my best to compile the results. This isn't limited to Bb trumpets .. C's, D's are welcome and also cornets.
Great Strads I own:
Bb - 284xxx
Bb - 47xxx
Bb - 86xxx
C - 404xxx
Great Strads I used to own:
Bb - 303xxx
Cornet - 300xxx
Horrible Strad (Worst)
Bb - 455xxx
I have owned somewhere between 40-50 Strads and these were the stand outs at the upper and lower end.
I hope this proves to be a productive thread. _________________ Bb - Yamaha Xeno 8335RGS

I am not sure you are going to get any consensus, but I have a couple around 177000 that are fine.

Hey yeah I have 2 B-flats serial# 55xxx and #33xxx and my C is serial#53xxx. They are all great horns. I have owned a few others with serial numbers up to 300xxx. My opinion is that the older the horn the better quality and sounding. |

Oh, this is too just too much of a temptation
Aren't the best serial numbers the ones starting with YTR
With any luck I will shortly be finding out about Bach numbers from the point of view of an owner - just waiting for one to arrive at the moment - no idea on that one's serial number yet, will post my thoughts when (if - it's been in transit a while) it arrives. |

My Bach C 229 is number 759xx This was purchased in April of 1974 brand new by me, but the numbers suggest its manufacture was several years prior and it probably just sat on Giardinelli's shelf for a few years. Why is anyone's guess, cuz it's the best playing C I have ever tried, and far surpassed the others I tried on that day in April. Can anyone tell me for certain its year of manufacture? _________________

Last count 23 Bach's and still counting. Haven't seen a Bach that hasn't been abused ,tweak and made a great sounding horn, easiest playing 37 R 150xxx, Best core 37 23xxx Mt. Vernon, darkest 400xxx 37G. Best Legit C 229 36xxx. Best all around horn 25 500xxx. All the great Bach's I have been torn down and rebuilt from scratch by Pettifors.
Other Bach's are better than average but not great horns. The only other horns i own are two Vintage 1 1BR and A C. I have tryed other horns the just don't fit me. |

Horns from that vintage in my experience are really good. Your horn was probably brand spanking new (no shelf life) when you purchased it. 70500 dates to Jan. 1973, so it's likely your horn is from '74.

Thanks for all the input guys and gals. Keep it comin!! It appears thusfar that the early 70s and late 60s Bach's take the cake so far as being of better quality. Of course we should all realize that serial # 45626 may be awesome where # 45627 may be a howling dog of a horn .. this is just for entertainment only. Be proud of your great Bach's and let the world know too if you have a terrible one. We want to know.
I thoroughly enjoyed the YTR and the prime number comment. Hmmmm ... imagine a Prime numbered Mt. Vernon .... oooohh ... aaahh !!
Anyone else .... Alex you are more than welcome to chime in with your Mt. Vernon. _________________ Bb - Yamaha Xeno 8335RGS

I have two Bach's one from just each side of the move. Both my Early Ekhart 37 ML on the 39xxx ticket and my very late Mt Vernon 37 L (can't recall the number) are great horns. My teacher likes them both and he generally hates Bachs. Never had a dog although I've tried a few.

My 1964ish Mt. Vernon is due back from the Brass Bow next week. It used to be a great playing horn. The last few years it seemed to be stuffy or something. Hopefully it'll be great again after a valve job and a Tanabe valve alignment.
Anyone have any horns that they really regret selling? I once had an older Elkhart C....one of the one that had valve casing made from two pieces rather than one like the newer ones. I sold it because my other C (144xxx 229G 25H) played better and I didn't think I needed two C horns. I often wonder what the old one would have played like if I had experimented with different bell.
Oh well.......

Yes I would venture to say a lot of people have their depressing violin stories of when they sold that "great" Bach they shouldn't have. I once owned a Bach Bb 301xxx. Well to this day it was the best Bach I have EVER played hands down. Why did I sell it? I thought I was a Yamaha man so I got a Xeno Bb and C and liked them at best. They played real well but I missed that Bach more and more every day. So, since then, I've been looking for an equivalent horn... movie reference ... "been chasing Amy ... so to speak".
To make it worse, the guy I sold it to put more lemon juice in my wound by telling me that it played better than 2 Mt. Vernon's he owned. Have mercy already!!! _________________ Bb - Yamaha Xeno 8335RGS
