Read the book, memorise the technique then get a straw and a glass of water.

Use the technique to blow into the straw, to create a continuous stream of bubbles.

Keep practising until the flow of air bubbles are the same rate and the bubbles are the same size.

Then move to the trumpet when you can achieve this.

Listen to the sound at the point at which you change from your resovoir of air in your throat and cheeks and back to lungs again. Aim for it to sound a smooth & continuous note.

I believe that the straw and water technique is the best way to start. I have taught several players that way. It is also a very good trick for bar bets.

I found the hardest part of the technique as applied to trumpet to be maintenance of support. I think that there is a tendancy to take very shallow breaths with bad results quickly following. Work hard at inhaling from down low -- the idea is not just to inflate your cheeks but to keep playing trumpet.

It is important to learn to do this smoothly while holding a single note, but in performance I almost always do it on a trill or during something like an eigth note run up a a mid-range scale.

This is probably a dumb question but, what is cyclic breathing?

Keeping an air pocket in your cheeks, releasing the air from it into the mouthpiece as you are inhaling through the nose into your lungs, then as you exhale from your lungs, filling the air pocket in your cheeks. Makes it appear that the air stream is (almost) uninterrupted by breathing.

It is most often called circular breathing. There are method books by Joe Burgstaller (a trumpeter) and Robert Spring (a clarinetist).

I haven't yet located the book mentioned above, but this looks to be a short intro to it by the same author.

I learned circular breathing while driving my car in HS after clark Terry made an appearance with our band. I could see what he was doing and asked him about it. He demonstrated and I decided to learn how to do it.

Pretty simple- fill the cheeks with air, push out with the fingers and thumb of one hand while inhaling through the nose, after a while try to let the cheek muscles take over for the fingers/thumb. Once you can reliably keep the wind moving as you disconnect/reconnect with the lungs, start applying it to an easy tone on the trumpet.

Like learning to double and triple tongue (which I learned while riding my bike around on a paper route every day), it was much more simple for me to learn the skill process off of the horn first, then add it to what I could already do. Good luck.

Wow! It's hard! I can't make a good buzz using my mouth's muscles.

How do you get the air into the cheeks?---My inhale takes the air to the lungs.

As you play allow a bit of extra air in - then you use that air to maintain the air pressure needed to maintain a buzz and inhale really quickly.

I found a cool video with James Morrison demonstrating a way of learning circular breathing. Just get a cup of water and a straw and blow bubbles and try to have the bubbles be consistent and not die out.

I don't recommend the water method for obvious reasons. It is a cool demonstration once you know how to circular breathe, but learning this way often leads to problems.

Are there any recommended videos on cyclical breathing... Mostly best to learn from listening and watching.
