Thought you all might enjoy this.
Last week my choir director started us working on arrangement of "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" that had a part scored for either clarinet or viola. He plays clarinet, we don't have a violist in the congregation. Since it's hard to conduct and play the clarinet, he wasn't quite sure what to do.
A couple of days later, I had an odd idea -- play the part on flugelhorn. We talked about it and decided to give it a try in this week's rehearsal ... do a one after the other trial of the piece with flugel or with clarinet. I went first. At the end of the run through, he put his clarinet back in the case and said, "That's exactly the mood I wanted for this piece!" He described the sound as "mournful" ... I was going for "reflective", hope he didn't mean "lamentable."
The moral of the story: If you're looking for places to play, be creative and look for opportunities in the unusual places.
Now if I could find paying gigs ...

Steve:
Someone in Cincinnati might want to hire some "mournful" music after the KC Chiefs come to town on Sunday! _________________ C. G. Conn 60B Super Connstellation

If it was originally for viola - I hope you played out of tune with frequent wrong notes
Always good to introduce the flugel into pieces that require a more mellow feel. The number of conductors who don't appreciate this instrument are great - it is our job to educate them!! |

| Cincinnati 24, Kansas City 19 ... no mournful work this week, at least not for the home town crowd! _________________ Steve Thiel

Glad the Bengals gave the Chiefs a little lesson in humility. |
