PostPosted: Tue Jul 23, 2013 7:03 pm    Post subject: Tanglewood Roster Archive? Reply with quote

Does anyone have/know where one could find a TMF roster archive? I think it would be really interesting to know what players went when, what players went with each other, etc.

I remember at Interlochen one of the cooler things is seeing all the WYSO sections signatures everywhere. Is there anything similar at Tanglewood?

FROM TERRY EVERSON:
In my office at BU is a multi-page spreadsheet list that someone put together of all of Roger Voisin's students from BU, BUTI, NEC, TMC and private teaching. I typed it all into Excel and sorted in various ways. Here is the TMC (or BMC, as I believe it was then known) list from 1966* backwards, with no guarantees of correct spellings in every case (I tried to correct all those I knew):

*(I have organized the complete listings from 1966-1961 above)

Albert Cioffi 60
Richard SanFilippo 60
Ronald Thompson 60
Hayden Dryden 59
Burton Sachs 59
Alan Tubbs 59
Paul Willison 59
Phyllis Blec 58
Donald McComas 58
Stephen Toback 57

Paula God 52
Robert Pandolfi 52

Marc Grund 46
Robert Nagel 46
John Ware 46
Calton Byer 42
John Iuele 41

It is believed that the list is incomplete from the years 1960-1941.

BUTI members:
-Andrew Balio (Baltimore Symphony)

*may not be 100% accurate, but fairly sure it is

Thanks for the info guys.

Mark Fleggs information helped me stumble upon.....

...the TMC rosters are "archived" but through a website called: archive.org.

To see scanned copies of past Tanglewood programs (include full roster):

1. Google: Boston Symphony Orchestra concert programs, Summer, 1996, Tanglewood
2. Replace "1996" from previous step with desired year
3. Click First result (has been first in all of my seaches)
4. On left side of the page under "View the book" choose desired form of viewing (I have been using "Read Online")
5. Search "Ghitalla" (as in Armando A. Ghitalla Fellowship) and go forward until finding the trumpet Fellows

Troubleshooting:
In case top result returns a different year than intended:
1. In the search bar of the website (after clicking first result from previous steps), enter the original search input.
2. It should yield one result which is the program of the correct year

I do not know how far back they go yet.

abontrumpet,

What an excellent thread! Thanks for digging in and doing the research to find the programs for Tanglewood online. I enjoyed looking through many of them.

1971 (Page 258 of 332):

1973 (Page 283 of 390):
Stephan Ametrano
Gene Crisafulli

James Tinsley
Ernest Young

1974 (Page 253 of 408):
Stephen Ametrano
Barbara Butler (Eastman, Northwestern)
David Hickman (International Soloist, University of Illinois, ASU)
George Karmazyn
Mark Schubert

And Trombone:
Norman Bolter (Boston Symphony Orchestra)

1976 (Page 378 of 380):

Carol Warner

1979 (Page 618 of 732):

I'll see if I can go through a few more now that I see how to use the search feature.

Derek Reaban,

Thank you for the rosters. I have added them to the large list and am continuing to add the missing years. It appears the announcement of the Fellowship program came in 1965. 1966 appears to be the first roster (which you may have known based on your first entry). Thanks again!

For those that are looking at the rosters online, "Ghitalla" becomes a significantly less effective search function starting somewhere in the 80's. The search I have found that always works, even it requires more digging, is: "trumpets" start from the back and go towards the front.

I found Brian Moon in BUTI (the young artists...not the fellows) in 1972.

Pretty short list, Terry. There are many names missing. The list should be three times that length.

With the names that Terry Everson generously provided, I did some digging into the years: 1964-1961. I have updated the list through '61 and in '63 it appears that Everson's list has three students while the program had six.

After the year 1961, there is absolutely no mention of the students in the program.

Thank you for the list of names Mr. Everson, I will add them, and your message, to the big list (unless you wish to keep your post separate from the big list).

-George Karmazyn
-David Hickman (International Soloist; Prof: University of Illinois, ASU)
-Barbara Butler (Professor: Rice; Northwestern; Eastman)
-Mark Schubert (Former Honolulu Symphony)
I don't recall Mark being there in 74 but maybe he was?

YAP
Roger Zacks (ask him the rest)

1973 (Page 283 of 390):
-Stephan Ametrano
-Gene Crisafulli
-George Karmazyn
-James Tinsley
-Ernest Young

YAP
Edwin Earl Garr
Brian Moon
Jeff Shuman
Roger Zacks

1972:
-Ron Christianson
-Ed Hoffman
-Ray Mase (NY City Ballet; American Brass Quintet; Prof Juilliard)
-Calvin Price
-James Tinsley

If BUTI was around (high school tanglewood):

It was called YAP:
Boston University Young Artists Program
- Paul Randall (New Orleans Philharmonic; North Carolina Symphony
-Brian Moon (Teatro Communale)
-Edwin Earl Garr

Paul would know the 71 list, he was there.

HEY - Brian Moon - Where are you?

You were at Tanglewood in 197? ?

I found Brian Moon in BUTI (the young artists...not the fellows) in 1972.

The 75 list appears to have been mixed with the 74 list
