Is there anyone who does stamp excercizes on picc? I have quite a bit of picc work coming up, and was wondering if there is anything in the stamp book that works to help your picc playing.

Bert Truax had me play the scale study (number 6 in the old edition with the green cover) on pic. The instructions were to play it in the key of F, on the A pipe (where most of my pic playng fell), beginning on low F. Rest a lot, keep the air moving but not forced and listen to the sound you're making (rather than "Did I hit the note").

Hope this helps,

Hi Socrates!

Dont be afraid to experiment a little. You can basically use many of the exercises in your piccolo training. For example take the basic Stamp melody (exercise 3) and play it starting at F sharp. Then play variations a and b starting with the same note. Then move up to G etc. as high as you can. The trill ex. (page 20) with regular fingerings starting from G is also good. Play the second repeat tongued. Continue upwards.

Happy practising!

Timo

In a master class one principal trumpet in a Spanish symphony orchestra says that he study Stamp exercices one day in Bb trumpet, other in C trumpet, other in Eb and other in Picc, then in rotary. Then Thompson Buzz Book in Bb, other they in C, etc.

I think is a good idea to do exercices in various trumpets. In this way I think you don't practice exercices in one way for this trumpet with a particular air resistance, a particular pitch issue of this trumpet, you practise with different air resietences, etc.

I've been doing Stamps for years, and honestly never considered doing them on picc until I read this thread!

I don't have any good reason why - it had just never crossed my mind. I'm going home and trying this today, I'm guessing I might feel a little more "connected" with my picc than I ever have.

My Stamp-schooled teacher only ever advised me to practice Clarke Technical Studies on the picc. And then only after I had completed my regular routine, including Stamp, on my Bb. He specifically advised against doing much of my regular daily routine on the picc.
