Is it the audio being out of sync, it seems like he rips the horn off his face and jumps before the last note finishes in Oxleyk's clip.
As for Trent's post, certainly impressive playing, but I actually prefer Doc's recording of the same song from sometime in the 60s? High, Wide and Wonderful album, iirc. More from the enjoying of the musicality of it, not necessarily the high note extravaganza that Maynard brought to the show.
What's yours? I am shocked by his absolute mastery of the instrument on this clip! amazingggggg!
WOW.
Truly amazing the way he could play up there, and then come down and play in the low register. I wonder if there was any studio magic in there . . . _________________ www.mikesailors.com
When young students tell me they like Maynard (and I know this is probably gonna open up a big ol' can of worms) I ask them if they've listened to any pre-1963 Maynard. When they say no, I refer them to that very tune & recording, which is, IMHO, when he was playing the best. I'll also bet that's around the time when Bud Herseth said his famous quote of Maynard is the best trumpet player who ever lived.
Every time I hear this cut I can envision those old analog needles absolutely pushed to their limits, especially during the last 30 seconds...probably even bent them! _________________ Tim Wendt

Actually, those old analog systems sounded far better than what's available today, in my opinion.

Used to listen to Maynard a lot as a kid. Can't anymore. Vast majority of it just sounds like trumpet gymnastics to my ear. Doc was much more musical. _________________ Greg

Absolutely awesome.
This reminds me of a guy I used to rehearse with (sadly no longer with us) who saw Maynard live in the 50's and was so enraptured when he produced one of his amazing glisses he involuntarily raised his hands up in time with it.
Unfortunately he was holding a pint of beer at the time and poured it all over himself.
Don't think there are many Trumpet players ever that you could say produced a reaction like that! _________________ Eclipse Enigma

I started to say that there probably aren't too many audience members that drunk while a trumpet player was performing, then realized how obviously incorrect that would be.

GOOD LORD!!! AMAZING!!!
I was fortunate enough to meet and see Maynard perform several times from the early 70's on, but the only pre-70's recordings I have of him are some boxed sets on the Roulette label.
Incredible player. Gabriel went down to 2nd chair once The Boss got up there.

Very nice. Great thread; nice to hear the early(er) Maynard - the later stuff seems so much more common.
Any idea about what year this "Danny Boy" was done? And thanks for posting all the above. _________________ Jonathan Milam

Great collection of videos. Wow. Had the pleasure of seeing him live in the early 1990s. From our auditorium seats we could clearly hear him warming up backstage. That alone was worth the price of admission.
