IŽd say: TOP SECRET!

At first sight I thought the guy misunderstood bubble mute and placed a chewing gum bubble at the wrong end...

Maybe a tone intensifier intensified to the extreme?

It's the new court ordered, breathalyzer mouthpiece. It keeps you from blowing under the influence or BUI.

My guess is he sprays a lot when he plays.

Looks like he's playing a Bubble C.

So you're saying he's a spitter?

Perhaps it's real-life proof-of-concept of the M.A.S.H. ala Jeff Curnow (go to 2:12 for reference, although the whole clip is funny):

That is hilarious! Great input.

Actually, all the contributions have been simply, um, just too punny.

Are we any nearer in determining what the real contraption is the trumpet player was using and for what purpose?

Best wishes,

Lloyd

I think he just has issues keeping a tight seal from the corners of his mouth to his eye-teeth. Maybe a medical condition such as a stroke.

I know Leigh McKinney has made mouth pieces with sprung outer pieces to help with this.

It really looks like a filter of some kind and not solid at all. Maybe it keeps the bees away.

Mystery solved!

I happened to see this thread, and followed the link. The trumpeter is Colin Graham, and in that picture he is playing with the Yiddish Twist Orchestra.

I reached out to them on Facebook, and they said that it was some kind of insulator for playing cold gigs.

Before I found this out, I thought maybe he used a special embouchure setup that he wanted to keep secret. (I read somewhere that there was a jazz pianist who used to play with a handkerchief covering his left hand so that people couldn't "steal his chords"!)
