About a month ago I found something on Craigslist that I have been on my list for a long time... a Signature 2000 Bb. I finally got a chance to oil it up and play it. Wow! I have, and have had a number of outstanding trumpets. This is among the best that I have ever encountered. I haven't spent too much time with it yet, but from what I have played so far, I don't understand why folks don't seek these things out.

This one has the large diameter bell, which leads me to believe that this is an "LA" model. No where on it does it say DEG. It shows Signature, 2000 Custom Series U.S.A. The serial is F 520x, and the number 2098 is stamped on the underside of the mouthpiece receiver. The Monel valves are tight and feel great. The valve guides look just like Getzen. I expected to see the weird nylon system that I have seen on other Allied built horns.

I know Mr. Scodwell had a hand in the design of this trumpet. Anyone have any ideas about the lack of DEG markings or the valve guides? I really appreciate any thoughts.

Here are the obligatory photos:

Nice find! This is a sign of the times: E-Bay was a fad who's time has come and gone. Very little stuff is even listed there anymore, for whatever reason. (Bill me later getting their billing all wrong, ever-increasing fees of both E-Bay and paypal) We might be returning to the days of the local pawn shop find? (Along with goodwill, craig's list, etc.)

This is not the same instrument. Mine has a different 1st valve hook and pinky ring.

Is it a D.E.G. ? I thought the Signature series was Getzen. (Getzen and DEG are different)

The valve guides look normal for a Getzen. The white plastic disappeared years ago; they are all black (delrin?) now.

Where's Adam when you need him?

Gary.

This is exactly what is puzzling me. No DEG anywhere on the horn, and a valve guide system that is a dead-ringer for Getzen. I have a few theories, but am hoping for someone in-the-know to chime in.

Component-wise it doesn't look very familiar to me. The receiver and first slide finger hook don't ring a bell. It could possibly be a component horn. I have to apologize for having almost no interest in horns that were manufactured when we didn't own the company.

Excellent discovery! I certainly agree to their quality. Since the early 90s, I've been playing on the NY protype with tunable bell which was designed by Tony Scodwell with the assistance of my old mentor Walter Blanton. Its needed nothing but cleaning and my removal of the old gold lacquer. Every several years I head into a shop to try out the latest horns and walk away all the more thrilled with mine. The series of horns seems to be better know in Europe and serves as a backup for Callet players.

I'm thrilled to have just purchased the Flugelhorn for the series which Tony made a particular point to recommend; still in route.

Kudos on your Craigslist find!

Shawn

Your Signature trumpet was built in the 1980’s for Donald E. Getzen by Allied Music, owned by his brother Robert β€œBob” Getzen, so it is not a Getzen brand instrument at all. Many valve parts are common DEG Dynasty marching brass and early Monette valve sets. Bells were sourced from Kiefer of Elkhart, IN which was later bought out by Edwards and moved to Elkhorn, WI in order to establish bell making in-house. DEG Signature Bb trumpet models were identical, but with two different bells. The β€œNY” bell was broader with an unsoldered 4 7/8" diameter rim. The β€œLA” had a narrower profile at 5” diameter, made of lighter gauge brass with a soldered bead. Of course, Tony Scodwell can fill in any additional details I may have overlooked.
