Martin Committee trumpets are nice by themselves, but is there really a difference between the "regular" committee and the Deluxe model, besides the engraving on the bell?

Apparently the difference was only cosmetic:

“The Committee came is at least two models, a DeLuxe which had
nickel silver slides, and the standard”

“It will depend on what model of Committee it is. The Deluxe (brass with
nickel-silver trim and engraving) commands a higher price than the
Standard model (all brass).”

A true deluxe will also have DELUXE engraved on the mouthpiece receiver.

Having owned several of each, I can tell you the "regular" (all brass) Committee seems to have the best sound. The "Deluxe" models are waaay over-rated.

People still are willing to pay more for them (Deluxe models), for some reason.

The difference of a "regular" committee and a "deluxe" is purely cosmetic. There are a few deluxe committees from certain years that don't have "deluxe" printed on the lead pipe-from my expierence there is no difference in sound between a deluxe and a regular. There is a difference from horn to horn-I've had 3 #3 bore committee and found then all to have a different feel and sound. I have been told by sax players that this is also true of vintage mark 6 tenors as well. that's my .02 anyway!

They started engraving the mouthpiece receiver with the word DELUXE in 1956, prior to that it was left blank on deluxe models.

As others here have stated, It is just more bling to have the nickel siver slides. That is all.

The difference is NOT just cosmetic. The deluxe models tend to have less of a dark sound... thus less of the "true committee sound." I have played 2 of them. Both were fine horns, though one had some intonation issues with top space E. Neither of them sounded as good as my "regular, non-deluxe" committee.

I'm with Robert and Zack on this one, The playing qualities of all brass vs nickel on brass can be significant. No doubt the name "Deluxe" suggests you get more than the all brass Committee models, especially when you dress it up with nickel trim and fancy engraving. Surely the added cost of material and highly skilled engravers justified a higher price by the manufactuerer. That being said, it all boils down to what sound compliments your musical goals. It's been said "Some people listen with their eyes."

Hi Zackh411, that post of mine is an old one- since that post I've played both the regular and Deluxe versions enough to agree with your post. The Deluxe in fact do play brighter and also with a bit more resistance due to the nickel plating.

It's actually nickel-silver tubing almost all the time and certainly in the case of these Martins.

I asked Charlie Melk about that as I preferred the all-brass Model 228 Lightweight 400 to the brass and nickel-silver Model 217 Lightweight 400 and he told me that they will indeed sound different but it's difficult to predict. However, as I remember him saying, you won't see orchestra players using horns with nickel-silver tubing, they will be all brass.

I do have a horn with a nickel-silver mouthpipe, but that one plays as it does because of the tapers more than anything else, which I am sure is true with most instruments. That said, the nickel-silver does have an effect on the sound.

I used to own both versions. While they were very similar, there were some clear differences. My all brass model was a bit older, but the horns were only separated by a few years so I found the differences interesting.

The deluxe felt lighter in my hand, had a slightly different bell taper in my opinion and for some reason seemed to have a slightly larger diameter mouthpiece receiver (don't know if that was from wear or design.)

My all brass version was restored by Charlie Melk and so is one of my regular horns to play. I will also say that there was a difference in sound between the two. My all brass Committee does seem to get a lot of core, where as the deluxe had a bit more spread. It was a difficult choice to sell the deluxe as I very much liked how it played.

The standard Committees had a heavier/thicker bell than the Deluxe models. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that the standard Committees tend to a have a warmer/darker sound than the Deluxe models. That said, being primarily a small group player I prefer that warmer, more vocal sound. The previous poster said he prefers the sound of the Deluxe and if I were a lead player trying to cut through a loud big band I probably would too (not saying that's what he does necessarily). However, I do play a good number of commercial and big band gigs and my standard Martin does just fine for those purposes (although not as good as my Schilke did).

As a retailer of instruments you might want to read the sticky at the top of the horns forum about selling in the forum.

No problem. It really isn't my job to correct anyway.

If you have a website you might want to add it to your signature so people who might be interested in your merchandise could find you.

Good luck.
