I have recently tried playing some new Mutec mutes and I am looking for other opinions on how they play. For those of you who have tried them, what do you like and dislike about them? And which straight mute would be most practical to buy for solo performance, the all aluminum, copper bottom, or brass bottom?

I have a Mutec copper bubble mute. It's sound is very "twangy" (edgy) compared to the JoRal copper bubble mute. Because the sound of the Mutec copper bubble mute really sticks out it definitely shouldn't be used in a section unless all the other players use the same mute.

I have the Mutec all-aluminum, brass bottom, copper bottom and all-copper straight mutes. They are excellent mutes -- good core sound, intonation and projection. I use them in my C and Bb trumpets.

As for which is best for solo playing, it strongly depends on the sound you are looking for. If you want something on the lighter/brighter end of the spectrum -- which I think of as being a "traditional" straight mute sound -- then the all-aluminum is probably your best bet. If you want something darker/more elegant, then the all-copper might be a good choice.

For ensemble playing I would say that the all-aluminum and then perhaps the brass bottom works best in terms of blending and being suitable sound-wise for most genres.

I have a brass bottom Mutec straight mute I use for when I need a loud mute in the orchestral setting. The sound doesn't break up and it has great intonation.
