Had anyone seen the "Dizzy Gillespie with the United Nations Orchestra" gig in the Royal Festival Hall, London?

How incredibly Sandoval plays at this gig, and to suddenly half way through "Night in Tunisia" to pick up his piccolo and do a solo of famous classical pieces - what a phenominal talent.

Has anyone seen this video? Was anyone at the gig? Comments or discussion points in here!

thanks people

Funny tho isnt it - dizzy used to be like the best, in the 40s when he was infront of that big band, kicking out double g's and all that - and in that gig in the 80's hed really lost so much oif all that - getting on a bit tho! Arturo really does make the show what it is - i mean he was more of the front man than Diz at the same time as being nice about it!

Well I'm not so sure at 80 yrs. that Dizzy's unique technique/embouchure would last.

It was'nt exactly textbook was it? --nonetheless effect when he was younger....
a lesson for us all perhaps!!

I have seen parts of the movie. And I thought it was awsome. I always wondered if playing picc. affected that last lick where it sounds like as if he goes up and then comes back down. Or maybe it was part of the song or something.

Dizzy was a very nice guy, too... He gave a clinic after a concert, and it was amazing some of the things he did. Circular breathing was interesting -- he stored a lot of air in them cheeks!

FWIW, he died January 6th, 1993.

evolution,

I haven't seen a CD, but I've bought the cassette (new) at a flea market for $2. Someday I'll get around to putting it on a CD along with all my old MF, Doc, Clark, etc. LPs.

I have a mp3 of him playing a night at tunisia during that concert. And on the trumpetstuff.com web site site if you click under Arturo you will find a video of Arturo playing the picc solo and then picking the trumpet back up.

Considering everything that Dizzy Gillespie has done for jazz and the trumpet - he would/should headline no matter what. I can't imagine seeing Sandoval's name above Diz at a concert - Sandoval is a great player but Diz is one of the immortals.

It's kind of like Palmer, Snead and Nicklaus in golf. Sure, they can't beat the young bucks like Phil, Tiger and Duval but they are legends. Men who made the game what it is today.

Diz is King!
