I had a quick question about the 6 notes. It says to repeat, but how many times? I have received mixed answers. Some say as many times as it takes until just air comes out the end of the bell and I have been told twice. Can anyone clarify this?

For me it depends on what I'm trying to get out of the Six Notes...

If i'm using that exercise as part of my warm-up two times through is enough for me to get that benefits I need from it.

If I'm using it to work on my endurance, I'll usually play through it as many times as I can without hurting myself. You'll be the best judge of where that is for you personally.

Just remember that Caruso exercises aren't necessarily musical exercises..They're designed to workout and get certain muscle groups working in a certain way. Don't worry about the sound when you play through them.

#1- Internal repeats for the six notes: 1 repeat

#2- External repeating of the 6 note exercise throughout your daily practice sessions: as many as you feel will help establish a "blow" and improve your sound.

I would never ask a student to repeat the 6 notes more than once without removing the mouthpiece from the lips and resting. This is a not an acceptable use of the Caruso Method!

I remember a thread here, a while back, saying that Victor Paz did it 50 times

Yes, I heard that rumor. I believe it was 50 times with rests between each time (with repeat). I was assigned 20 time a day for one week.

I do not believe Victor did that but he is around to ask. I do believe he played up to Double C with one setting.

The reason I do not believe he played the 6 notes 50 times is because, #1 Carmine would never break his own rules and #2 Victor already had a great sound when he came to Carmine. My sound sucked hence the 20 times.

I bookmarked this thread. It is long but answers a lot of questions regarding the Caruso exercises. Also there are a series of YouTube videos by Julie Landsman that are excellent.

Do it until you can hear the pitches, play them as easliy as possible and when you feel that you achieved the foundation of the exercise.

1 repeat.
I personally did no more than 3 total 6 note exercises in a day.
