No doubt Mac is a beast, great chops, lots of creativity, bebop lines forever....recorded with the who's who of the 1980s pop scene.

But that doesn't get you a free pass on opinions from guys on a project they don't like.

And certainly doesn't give you a pass to get personal with attacks on guys that opine on your music ( at Mac's request) and don't dig it.

I hope Mac is successful with this electronica project. But I'd rather here him lead a section in a big band, or rock band, or play straight ahead or hard bop, or blister paint off the walls with Mac's wicked high chops.

Here endith my rant

Trithfully, I took this for granted on the TH. Perhaps incorrectly, I assumed a solid prercent of TH jazzers would enthusiasticaly commit suicide if promised a re-incarnation at Minton's in '41. Or even Paris '63 with Dexter. Unless I'm hopelessly wrong, Mac would be pleased to meet you there. And Mac could bring along some of his albums as introductions.

Having been out there, plus having the occasional pleasure of gigging with with Mac, I'd just like to say, "Keep kickin' it Mac." No apologies if you make a pinch of coin along the way. It's much harder than others assume.

"Making a pinch of coin"??

Do you have any idea how many times I've played " Play that funky music white boy, Dancing Queen, My Girl, In the Mood, 1 o'clock Jump, All the Things You Are, and Blue Bossa" etc???

I understand making money as a trumpet player. I do. My soul has been crushed many times collecting a paycheck.

But if people don't like a project band I'm in, successful or not...so what. The next gig is right around the corner.

Again I hope Mac makes some bucks with his new project. But no need to get bitter if other trumpeters think it's weird or boring. Mac has nothing to prove to anybody.

Caught Mac last night with a pop-blues group in a club just outside Phila. Really nice venue - small, uncrowded, comfortable, good acoustics, good sound man. Once again, wouldn't be the kind of music I'd expect most TH'ers to seek out. But Mac takes it to such another level. And the band graciously gave him a back-to-back feature that was off-the hook astounding. Over the last 20 years, I've heard most every other major trumpet player live in similar settings. And I don't know that any of them could demonstrate last night's range, power, and virtuosity back-to-back - Latin screamer then jazz ballad. I understand some will center on the backdrop. But as a trumpet player, I was lovin' it. He's a beast - any setting.

And for hipsters that would like to hear Mac in a more approved setting, check out this live boxing match with Ronnie Kuber at the Blue Note:

Mac's comment about listening to Doc Severinsen albums was totally uncalled for. Many of Doc's earlier albums are somewhat dated as to music choice, it is true, but they remain a lesson in how beautiful a trumpet can sound. Doc's sound is to die for. Mac's sound, to be kind, is "different" IMHO. What good is playing high if the sound is not there?

Sorry if I am offending anybody, but taking a shot at Doc just because someone doesn't care for one's playing? And after feedback was specifically requested? Not classy.

Mac-

I want tio apologize for taking a shot at your playing. It was late, I was in a bad mood, and I must confess to a certain amount of hero worship when it comes to Doc. I have heard you do some amazing things on the trumpet, and I guess my only real gripe is that you don't sound like Doc (who does?). Please forgive me.

Sincerely,

Steve Allison

Thanks to all the performances and to all that have attended the shows the music has really taken form in a direction that is past what I expected when originally beginning this project. I hope for your ongoing enthusiasm about the project and look forward to further development with this. Thanks

Mac Gollehon & The Hispanic Mechanics will be performing a tribute to the great late Hugh Masekela on Sunday March 18 at 10pm at Ottos on East 14th St near Ave B. It was my hope to book an earlier tribute to this great master but as scheduling allowed this was the earliest and most appropriate date and venue. Mac Gollehon & The Hispanic Mechanics will cover as much of the diverse crossover of soundscapes as possible from the great musician and composer within the confines of a one nighter. So with that said additional venues to reflect on the greatness of Hugh Masekela will be in order for the upcoming months. Anyone from TH that wants to come to the March 18 tribute will be admitted with no cover charge. See you there in the spirit of celebration of this amazing musician and composer-bandleader-artist that inspired so many toward a multi-genre musical experience.
