Put me on the list for that CD, Dave.

P.S. How come you left me out? Not to play (Yeah, I wish... ) but somebody had to cook up some pasta!

Seriously, can't wait for this CD to make its debut.

Mendez trios such as THE BRAVE MATADOR, JUMPING BEAN, ESPANA CANI, TRE-MENDEZ POLKA, GALLITO, and KIKO are plyed in combinations with me, Arturo, Wayne Bergeron, Jim Wilt, Robert Karon, and Jens Lindemann. What a blast we had when Bob Mendez dropped by to listen to some of he sessions. We conclude the CD with my arrangement of THE LIGHTNING TRUMPET for six trumpets and piano, a wild ride with double Cs and higher!

Sounds like an excellent CD Prof. Hickman although I am a bit surprised you weren't able to talk Malcolm McNab into playing. He does seem to be quite the Mendez fan.

Haha! Perhaps I should rephrase using the definite article THE.

"I was not aware that THE R. Mendez recorded Carnival of Venice.

How could I select a favorite?!

His "I Know that You Know" is an incredible display of his jazz technique.

His early recording of "La Virgin de la Macarena" is blindingly fast. His 1964 (Mendez in Mardrid) reveals a true artist with complete mastery of the horn. And "Danny Boy" will bring tears to your eyes. It's so emotional.

But I've been looking for his recording of "Carnival of Venice" -- he did one recording for -- was it Coast, Dr. Hickman? He did play it in many of his concerts.

Dr. Hickman, where can we find a recording of Ralph's "Carnival of Venice?"

Mendez never recorded Carnival of Venice for an album, but he played the Clarke arrangement's finale variation with one finger as an encore many times. I only have one concert recording where he plays this. It is very impressive and clean. That concert (from 1952) also included several solos (Tico-Tico, Czardas, Chiapanecas, Hejre Kati, Mexican Hat Dance) with the Arizona State College (now Arizona State University) Symphonic Band conducted by Harold Hines.

If anyone is interested is getting a CD copy of this recording (all of the solos plus encore), please PM me.

Dave Hickman
