The Chicago 1001, and the 1070. Both in silver plate. Both from: http://www.pickmusic.net/trumpets.htm

Quality is great. The 1070 is a bit too much for me with the .470" bore. I like the 1001 (.464" bore).

Tomorrow, I'll be getting another Kanstul horn, the WB/ZKT 1600, also done in silver plate. I started many years ago with a Benge .460" bore, my thinking is that out of the 3 horns I mentioned I'll like the 1600 best.

I'll be adding some (hopefully good) pictures of all three horns to my website soon.

The WB was a few hundred dollars more than the other two (which were the same price). The Chicagos are $1285. All the Anyway they are priced with gig bag and mouthpiece. The WB is $1490. Minor appearance differences in all three. Not apparent until you have all three of the side by side. The 1001 & 1070 have standard water keys, the 1600 has Amado water keys.

The gig bags that come with these now have Kanstul embroidered on the side and it is very sharp lookng. They are also very well made, enough protection as long as you are reasonably careful with it.

Sound wise, 1070 was darker, the WB was the brightest of the three, the 1001 was somewhere in the middle.

I'm not an expert, so I hope that helps.

I'm going to build a webpage showcasing the horns. I'll send a link to Priscilla and Mr. Kanstul. If they like them, they can use them.

The weather in Florida sucks. Cloudy, rainy, lousy. I took the pictures outside. No tripod, just a quick snap with a Kodak digital camera. I did buy the blue blanket just for this occasion.

The camera is a Kodak Easy Share Cx4200.

2 Megapixels, 1632 x 1232 Pixels.

However, tomorrow I am receiving another camera to replace the one above with the
one below:

Digital Zoom: 3.3 X, 3.1 Megapixels, 2032 x 1524 Pixels.

My plan is to take the horns outside (again and it's supposed to be sunny
tomorrow), and take some good quality pictures.

Difficult to take pictures of trumpets since they reflect everything. I am
hoping with the zoom capabilities, I can be out of range, yet lose nothing
in quality. I just want the blue blanket and sky to show.

If Priscilla and Mr. Kanstul like them, they are welcome to use the pictures.
Anyone is.

I want to take close-ups to highlight the subtle differences in all three horns.

Sorry about rattling on like this, but I'm pretty excited about this.

Photography is another great hobby... and the combination of trumpet purchasing/collecting/playing fits right in. I think we were talking a couple weeks ago with and about Paul Ayrick down in S Fla and his vintage horn collection and great photos thereof. Thanks for posting yours!

I took both my digital (HP, about three years old now) and my old Nikon Nikormat 35mm on our fall vacation to upstate New York and Niagara Falls. Used the digital when we were visiting family and for group photos, etc. but used the Nikon for the trip to the Falls. The difference in resolution was phenomenal. That old Nikon really does well. I need to save up some $ and get some lenses as well as get the light meter fixed.

(edited for further rambling...)

I wonder if you took advantage of the next cloudy day and took the digital camera out of "auto" exposure and set the f stop to a lower light setting if that would elminate some of the reflection of the horns? Perhaps this would even work on a nice, sunny day.... resetting to a faster "film" speed might help also. I've had fun experimenting with stuff like this on my digital, but I'll defer to someone who actually knows something about photography for more expert advice.

Good luck!

I'll try your advice.

I feel like I have cold feet when it comes to choosing. I was able to hit a high C with no problem on the 1001, yet, with the WB it isn't as easy. I'll play some more of both today.

I wouldn't worry about the high C thing -- on which horn do you sound best? I play-tested both the 1001 and the WB and picked the 1001 because of the sound I could get with it. If you can, get another set of ears on your playing with both horns -- I know that really helped when I was choosing! Otherwise, play towards a wall or other hard surface to hear some reflected sound (if you're not already doing that), it might help you hear some elements of the sound that will aid your decision.

Have fun!

Steve

I sound better on the 1001. I've been playing outside, and inside facing a wall. I will play more today and finalize my choice. Thanks everyone.

You need a tighter mpc backbore for that .470".

Still, I think it's best for "comeback" players to steer away from large bore horns unless they already have a history with them. You may want to "move up" later, but there's no hurry.

Those came out pretty well... still a little over exposed around the valve casings, but the blue blanket is definitely a nice touch. Ok, you've got me fired up... I'm going to need to experiment a bit later this week. I'm thinking outside with no flash (hmmm, but that might require a tripod at low light/wide open aperture settings, eh?)

I've been playing on a throughly-tweaked-at-the-factory Kanstul 1500S. What a great horn! That is, except for the resistance.
Actually, the resistance isn't high or bad, it's just that I'm a reformed bass 'bone player. I'm used to playing into a huge tube with practically no resistance at all.
I talked to Jack Kanstul last week about this. I figured a 1070 would be about as low-resistance as you could get. He sent me one on approval. I was right.
You can put some serious air into that 1070. Combined with the B4S / Prana mouthpiece it's wonderful!
Make no mistake, this is a big-bore horn. It says "Big Band" on the bell and that's the sound I get out of it.
I just love this horn.
