I managed to get one of these mics (a used one, for a steal of a deal), looked up trumpet recordings with the Royer R-122, and this is one thing I found:

I told my wife that now I can sound that good when I record myself in my little Pro Tools studio.

It is an incredibly beautiful sound, wouldn't you agree?

You won't regret it! I have a 121 (bought it in August) and it's already been used in a handful of pro recordings (and I use it pretty much daily at the shop).

Arturo sounds magnificent in that clip!

Enjoy!

The Royer is a ribbon mic, yes? Ribbon mics are pretty magical for recording horns of any kind.

It might be a great microphone but listening to that clip, I am immediately reminded of that old Ted Williams quote: "it ain't the arrow, its the Indian..."

Yes, it is a ribbon, great sounding mic, albeit expensive (on sale now for $1850 at Sweetwater Sound). It is phantom powered with preamp to boost the output of the ribbon from normal very low ribbon levels to normal mic levels. Not only does this save you from buying another (or better, with more gain and lower noise) preamp, but also means you don;t have to worry about blowing the ribbon if phantom power is applied (most modern ribbons don't have that problem, but I can still recall the cries of anguish when a fellow sound tech accidentally blew a vintage RCA ribbon years ago).

The R-122 has higher sensitivity than the 121 (kinda' thought they'd use the 121 but also notice Arturo is standing back a ways, good technique anyway). There are also stereo versions, and versions without the built-in pre-preamp.

That's a great mic for trumpet...but it's not the ONLY great mic for trumpet.

Engineers like other modern ribbon microphones for trumpet, such as these for ~$1000:
Samar VL37
AEA R84
Mesanovic Model 2
Shure KSM 313

For ~$500:
Beyerdynamic M160
Cacade Vin-Jet with Lundahl transformer
Rode NTR

And for ~$200:
NoHype LRM 2
Cacade Fathead
Golden Age Project R2

Ribbons just sound "right" on brass. Once you've heard it, it's hard to go back to condensor or dynamic microphones.
