Hi guys,

Can anyone recommend a french horn mouthpiece for my embouchure? I was asked to double on horn for a piece, and I'm borrowing the other horn player's backup instrument, but I'd like to pick up my own mpc.

Bill

I can't help thinking that it doesn't matter if you're only using it for one piece.

Sure if you're trying to develop on the instrument or train your chops then the right gear is helpful, but I can play horn, trombone, and tuba with TCE....
I care about my trumpet mouthpiece but the others don't matter because it's not what I do all the time. As long as you focus on using as little air as possible you can make any brass sound great. I particularly like the sound of a tuba played the TCE way. So articulate and clean.

Of course another answer might be "the smallest one you can get your hands on"... it just depends how that feels on your face!!

I have nothing useful to add to this. Years ago, I lived with a horn player. We would sometimes switch instruments as a goof.

When I played the french horn, it sounded like a trumpet, and when he played the trumpet, it sounded like a french horn! It was funny.

Anyway, good luck with your search.

Bach 10 french horn mouthpiece is not too big with a rim a little wider than most. I used to use it when I doubled french horn and trumpet. Real nice with a Conn 8D - a little stuffy with a 6D horn.

Another possibility would be a french horn mouthpiece with a large trumpet mouthpiece rim that would not interfere with your current, smaller trumpet mouthpiece. These would be custom jobs costing $100 or more. Golly, I wonder if something like that might be available used, on the MarketPlace - at a very reasonable price - under Mouthpieces and French Horn...
