Jon Kaplan has just won the Second Trumpet position with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra. He begins next season.

Jon received his BM degree in performance at Arizona State University in 2015, and then earned a MM in performance at Rice University, graduating last week.

Amazing guy and great player!

So what do they do down there anyway? It's like a job-winning machine.

The only other finalist was Austin Williams, who also just graduated from Rice. He did his undergrad at CIM with Mike Sachs. Congrats to him as well!

Had the pleasure of having Jon play second to me for a concert cycle in the fall. An excellent trumpeter and musician, and super nice guy to boot. Charlotte has a great addition to their section. Congratulations Jon!

What do they do down there? They are smart people who work their tails off and keep their ego out of the way. I am not at all surprised at their success.

I can see how sometimes people may confuse my logical, process orented thinking for sarcasm or being facetious, but that's how I think about things.

I have no doubt that they work hard and keep their egos out of it. But there are dozens of really good music schools with amazing teachers and students who I can only imagine have those same qualities. Yet, the Butler/Geyer duo seems to be a particular outlier when looking at top performing jobs. It makes me wonder what they do differently from the other elite programs and teachers to set themselves apart.

I know what you mean, I didn't take you as being pejorative, but I want to proliferate accurate knowledge. I've worked with them both and seen studio classes. It's really not that magical, although they are both brilliant teachers and players. Just laser focus, lots of work, very methodical, and know EXACTLY what the committee wants. And their students work like horses and most are great players the day they walk in. I don't think there's any more magic to it than there is in great cooking-- ingredients, knowledge, and practice. Although great cooking is also magical
