1920's Dixieland jazz. Bix Beiderbecke, Red Nichols, Jabbo Smith

Is anyone familiar with American jazz trumpeter of the 20's/30's Jack Purvis?
Copyin' Louis (1929)
Mental Strain At Dawn (1929)
When You're Feeling Blue (1930)

I recently discovered his work while playing some random 78 RPM records bequeathed to me by my grandfather. I am in awe of the man's talent--his recordings are sheer masterpieces!

Just finished listening to this cut...Great playing, here is a very interesting write up on him from 2014. If most of this is true, this guy led a crazy life! Wow, some stuff posted on YouTube, anxious to hear some more. Thanks for sharing this.

I would love to see a movie made about Purvis's life. I had discovered a hot jazz recording from the mid-30's on which Purvis actually sings (rare indeed):

"The Music Goes Round and Round"--Frank Froeba and His Swing Band

Well, I've not listened to it yet, but I found an LP today By Elmer Bernstein titled "BLUES & BRASS" The trumpets are:
Pete Candoli
Maynard Ferguson
Ray Linn
Mannie Klein
Conte Candoli
Conrad Gozzo

The LP is in near perfect condition, I uh, paid $9.00 for it, I hope it was worth it!

There is no one "best" piece for trumpet, but there are a few that are unsurpassed. The septet by Camille Saint-Saëns is one of those. I have been listening to this for decades and it never gets old.

Septet for Piano, Trumpet, String Quartet and Double Bass in E flat major, Op. 65

Enjoy,

Saw him live with the orchestra a couple of times back in the 70's. Increadible orchestrations and playing.

Trying to find as many Carl Saunders recordings as possible. His Out of the Blue album is wonderful as is Be Bop Big Band and A Beautiful Friendship album with the Gary Urwin Jazz Orchestra.

After seeing Hans Zimmer on tour last weekend I was intrigued by the lead Cello player. Her name is Tina Guo and she is really outstanding. Bought several of her albums and just keep listening. What a great find!
