So this isn't easy to admit, but I'm not very familiar with trumpet music. Everyone tells me that listening is one of the most important things you can do as a musician, but I just dont know where to start! Who's good? Who's not? I've been struggling for a long time to listen and I think it's starting to affect my practicing (infrequent, not driven at all, etc.). So my question to you fine people is, who should I start listening to? Classical and Jazz players are appropriate. A list of who and specifically what albums they've put out would be greatly appreciated!

Search for yourself, find out what you like, then ask specific questions. You'll not learn by broadly asking the internet to tell you what you should know.

It might be as interesting for you to listen to recordings of different players playing the same pieces.

For example - listen to Wynton Marsalis play Carnival of Venice, then listen to Maurice Andre play it... then listen to Wynton play the Haydn concerto, then listen to Maurice play it.
(I know there are recordings for all 4 of these on youtube).

Note the differences between these two, despite both being superb players, the can be really quite different.

If you find this useful, I'm sure someone could suggest additional head-to-heads you might find interesting.

What led you to want to play trumpet in the first place? Listen to that, intently and carefully.

What type of music do you like? (genre)... big band? Classical? Smooth jazz? Fusion?

I agree that finding artists you like can motivate you to practice and improve... Believe it or not, the first recording I heard that made me want to work on range was Simon and Garfunkles Greatest Hits my mom was listening to. I forget the song, but some studio guy blowing high A's if I remember correctly... I was like... THAT'S COOL!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YNsZLtzF18

Then I heard a song on the radio... Get it On by Chase... THAT WAS COOL.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRQFa4cOYAM

Then I was introduced to Maynard...

then Faddis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz8DTBx8TIM
... Then Irakere (Arturo)... etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7KMJ_dTawI

I found Maurice Andre on piccolo and found a whole new genre that was intriguing, and started working on that.

Found some old recordings by Harry James... listened to Louis Armstrongs phrasing.

I found some world class guys that don't appeal to me at all (public shaming to commence I am sure)... Miles Davis and Bix Beiderbeck don't do anything for me. Smooth jazz makes me hurl... etc.
