Howdy, folks. I had the distinct pleasure of hearing Marquis Hill and Blacktet play at the Jazz Standard here in NYC last night. What an incredible performance. Marquis Hill has been one of my favorite players for some time now - his playing is powerful, fresh, and original, and his band is devastating.

The rhythm section plays aggressive modern breakbeats for much of the time. Anyone, like me, that was obsessed with drum and bass in the late 90's and early 00's will feel right at home here. Rhythmically, it felt to me like a very up to date and modern approach, which clearly had strong ties to hip hop and drum and bass but still had an aggressive swing.

Hill, for his part, plays with power and a wholly original style, displaying command over the entire instrument and a fearless approach to improvisation. His original tunes are always interesting, and their takes on classics like "Minority" were refreshing and exciting.

They'll be at the Jazz Standard for a couple more days and the show I was at wasn't sold out, so if you can make it I highly recommend attending.

Cheers.
