Right before the big trumpet solo in the first movement, there are a string of muted D's and then only two bars of rest before the solo. Do the pros usually have an assistant play those muted D's to save themselves the trouble of dealing with mute change? What technique(s) would recommend for dealing with that mute change in an audition? |

No, I've never seen anybody use an assistant.
It's not an impossible mute change...there are faster ones in the rep. You really just need to practice it, and with a metronome so you don't lose time. It's very doable.
I'm not sure if this helps much, but FWIW.

Don't recall that being a problem. You can hold the mute with your left hand, during the muted notes to make it easier. |
