Hello friends! It's been a while since I posted. I have the opportunity to audition for a brass band, and they are asking for a solo "in the standard repertoire" for flugel. I did some googling, but mainly came across jazz flugel solos, which while fun to listen to, wasn't really what I was looking for. Can anyone recommend a solo or two for me to check out? I'd prefer a lyrical one, as that's more to my strength, but if there's a good technical one out there I'll look at that too.

Thanks all!

The slow movement from Himes' Flugelhorn solo piece (for brass band) might be a good choice.

There's a good arrangement of a brass band standard, "Mull of the Cool Bens". John Golland's "Concerto for Flugelhorn" is a bit more obscure, but good.
Franz von Suppé's "Des Hirten Morgenlied" isn't nearly as well known as it possibly should be. Ferro's "Black White", Hagen's "Vocalise", Hanmer's "Arioso and Caprice", Heath's "Reflections", Peaslee's "Nightsongs", Ridout's "Concertino", Sorah's "Berceuse", Turrin's "In Memoriam", Weignein's "Rhapsody" - good grief, there's a bunch of decent stuff out there if you just look.

In life guessers are losers, You are having to guess what they want because they wont tell you.

Get them to tell you otherwise you risk them being unhappy because you havent done what they asked, and turning you down.

Bit of a thread revival...

Wonder how the audition went if op is reading? And what they chose in the end?

I'd have gone with something like Children of Sanchez - lyrical sections, more technical sections and jazzy sections... You get to show off lots of skills in one piece.

i have seen many patheic people in positions of power, not knowing what they want then complaining that they didnt get what they want.

I had a manager who refused to tell me what he wanted me to do and I pressed him and he would not tell me, he explained it as, "if I tell you what I want then you will only give me what I ask for, I want you to give me more than I want"

He was a complete dick.

I became a pain in the ass until he told me what he wanted and I gave him what he asked for and much more, then he complained even though I gave him 5 times what he asked for it still wasnt enough for him.

You have to ask what people want the ones who wont tell you dont even know and usually are complete dicks like that guy was.

If you dont know what is wanted how can you possibly provide it.

Thanks for following up! I auditioned on cornet and flugel, and made it on cornet, 4th solo Bb cornet.

For the flugel audition, I played Aranjuez con tu Amor, plus the required excerpt, Journey of the Lone Wolf by Simon Dobson.

For cornet, I played Bride of the Waves and two excerps from Lone Wolf.

It was my first foray into flugel, and definitely a learning experience for me. This is my first opportunity to play in a brass band like this, and I'm very excited!

I'm having trouble pinning this one down. Anyone know of a source?
