I write this while waiting for the hurricane to arrive. Anyone know the scoop on Phil's sudden departure from the Philharmonic? When I was in NYC in June he did not play on the Mahler 7 and now the vacancy has been announced.

Has he appeared with the orchestra since the spring tour? Anyway, he is 68 and that's a pretty long career for a principal horn player. |

Changing of the guard, first Phil Smith now Phil Myers. Who's next? |

I have so enjoyed hearing his beautiful playing for many years. I always found his playing very interesting. Felt like he was always singing through the horn. That's been a wonderful model for me to attempt to recreate on the trumpet for many years. I will certainly miss hearing him in the future. Thanks and best wishes Phil! _________________ -scott |

I totally agree. I had the pleasure of playing in a summer festival orchestra with Phil in the early 80's, and playing brass chamber music with him as well. His playing was uniquely expressive and inspiring. He could play with more color changes, varied articulations and dynamic range than any brass player I have ever heard. An inspiration. |
