Our 10-piece swing band has two trumpets but most of our charts are written for one.
What's your advice?
Play everything in unison
Alternate tunes
Alternate sections of tunes
One trumpet transposes the part down a third.
Some other solution _________________ Jim Hatfield

Use one trumpet as primary and the other as a sub? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I play in a 10-piece swing band that has certain charts with only one trumpet part, and what we do is trade sections. Since most of those old stocks from the late 20s and 30s have very few written rests, these one-trumpet charts give us the opportunity to rest a little while not letting our chops get cold. _________________ Puttin’ On The Ritz |

This one will *not* work reliably. They tend to use more than one type of chord in a lot of songs. _________________ "Music is like candy, you throw the (w)rappers away." |

Thanks, guys! I think we'll go with the alternating sections approach and see how that works. _________________ Jim Hatfield

One guy plays, the other goes to the bar. If the guy makes it back from the bar, then he spells the other guy, and the guy that had been playing goes to the bar. |

Or....pain in the *** that it might be, write out second trumpet parts, unless the second guy can improvise harmonies.

Even if you got lucky with the third below approach, you'd probably be treading on the second horn in the stack--likely the alto sax. If you were trying to write a Trumpet 2 part, you really should assemble all the horn parts on a score to see if you can invent logical lines from what's missing harmonically. |

Incidentally, it sounds like you have a six- or seven-horn band. Many of the six- and seven-horn charts I have on my library actually are written for two trumpets. You're welcome to inquire. |

You're missing parts for your second trumpet, you say? Seems to be a bit of synchronicity here, in another thread he's looking for a second valve slide.

write out harmonies
trade out A/B sections
One play the tune, one play the solo
One play with a mute in unison
the stacking 3rds with work right up until it doesn't... in a really bad way |
