I have been lurking through some posts made related to these horns.

I might have a try, but alas, can't play/test them.

So, to narrow down the choices, could someone explain the different configurations/options available and their qualities ?

I am especially interested in understanding bore sizes/bell sizes.

I am currently on the market for a lead / commercial / bright horn

Thanks

5000L-YST is probably what you will want if you're after afforadble. If money isn't a problem, then the Geoff Winstead model with a bronze bell would also be worth trying.

I had a 5000L, great commercial horn, currently I have a 7770L-YST. It's VERY light and responsive, bright but does have some core also. GREAT build quality. This is from a former dealer website:

"The lightweight build with no braces at the main tuning slide, plus the use of all yellow brass primary tubing and a lightweight yellow brass bell make this a very responsive trumpet. We believe this to be our brightest sounding lead trumpet. And by using the fast taper design leadpipe, CarolBrass is able to provide the player with an open upper register without building a huge diameter air-sucking pipe. Lead players REALLY like the way the horns with this leadpipe respond."

I really think CarolBrass horns in general are a steal, especially good as a "gig horn" if you sometimes play in environments where horn damage is a bit more of a risk. No one wants to get their horn banged up, but better a 1500.00 horn than a 3500.00 one.

With CarolBrass trumpets, I recommend the regular sized bells as opposed to the large bells for projection reasons. The bronze PSM bell tail is a nice option. The 0.465 bore helps for the double braced regular leadpipe configuration, while 0.460 bore helps for reversed leadpipe. Sterling leadpipe is another nice option.

I agree with others that CarolBrass is good quality for the money, and they are unmatched for customization at a fair price. However, others do argue Brasspire has more playable models for the same price. Jupiter is another consideration for a little more money.

A guy and TH member that has all these brands new and use in his store would be Trent Austin from AustinCustomBrass. Trent should be able to stir you in the right direction.

No affiliation, just a happy customer of ACB

Trent is great, I've done lots of business with him. But unless there has been a recent change, he is no longer a Carol dealer. Doug Teeter might be a good place to start, and I bought my Carol from Seacat Music.

For a lead or big band horn I would look at the Carolbrass 5000L-YST or the 5000L-YLT which is a little darker broader sound. I would not get the scratch finish on the lightweight bell. I think it cuts down on the projection of this model.

I'm gonna follow this thread. I'm shopping and they are on my radar seems like a lot of positive reviews. I don't need a 4K top of the line horn but I would like best bang for the buck. As for dealers
Might want to give Steve a call he is a dealer.

Hi jicetp, most of the Carolbrass horns with bronze bell are discussed and compared on this page:

http://www.carolbrasscms.com/comparing-4340---4440.html

Worth noting that the submodels more suitable for lead roles from the 4440 and 4340 range are likely the ones with a yellow brass bell, with the tubing made from Phosphor bronze instead. My concern is that a fully bronze instrument might not fit the role. See this clip by Trent Austin for the CTR-4440 in full bronze:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJsn1Q95TwE

But do not forget the CTR-6280L-PSM, also with a bronze bell:

Carolbrass has very recently introduced a new horn with a wonderful brilliant tone. It is the CTR-5280L-GLT(D), also called the Euro Trumpet. Available in .460 and .465 bores.

Here is Steve Dillard from HornTrader on it:

Regards, Guido

PS. Do you still have those Warburton flugel pieces that you listed on the Trades&Trial thread a few days ago? I am interested in them... Msg me.

To revive this.
I am also interested in lead horn buy I play on medium bore
Xo 1600i and schilke B6

So from older thread saw 5205L-YLT as a medium bore with someone using ML tuning slide with it to open it a little.

Q
Where can I order factory built custom horn at good pricing?

Thanks
Andy
