Doug Teeter of Carolbrass USA showed at NAM one of the newest members of the Carolbrass family... the CB long model cornet. The horn was shown in two bore variants... A medium 0.460", and a larger 0.465" bore. Both units in lacquered yellow brass.

Current models have the following part numbers:

CCR-3880-GSS(LB)-L -- 0.medium 460 bore
CCR-3882-GSS(LB)-L
-- medium large 0.465 bore

Trent Austin nabbed both show units for his ACB shop, and is offering the .460 variant for the very attractive price of $949.

The larger bore variant will cost a little more... $TBA.

See:

http://austincustombrass.mybigcommerce.com/carol-brass-long-cornet-in-lacquer/

Trent has posted the following initial specs:

Key: Bb
Finishing: lacquer
Bore: ML 0.460"
Bell: Gold brass
Bell size: S 4.724"
Bell thickness: S (Standard)
Leadpipe: Yellow brass

Has anyone tried them out at NAM? Please post your impressions here.

To Trent.... How about creating and posting a nice video clip of the new creatures?

Saluti, Guido

I went on to TAs site and had a look. Certainly looks good, and the price can't be beat. And maybe that's the problem. The same is true of my Kanstul 703 which looks fantastic, built very well. But it simply disentangle play for me. I've used all sorts of mouthpieces with it; even used it on s gig. Good thing I had my trumpet...

I think the Edwards is going to be fantastic. But it could be up to a year before its on the market, and there are other factors with this horn I'd rather not mention but based on Dillions price point with the X trumpet, I think it's going to weigh in at about 4K.

I've written to some respected horn makers. I'd rather not mention names, but if I'm going to pay four grand for the horn, I want some input as to exactly what I want. And I dint think with this one particular builder the horn is going to even come close to 4K. And I'm not talking Kanstul. One bad horn, for me, is more than enough. I'm sure I'll be selling it shortly. But not on the TH.

I don't want to seem mysterious with this post. I need a horn I know will work for me. And at a price that won't break the bank. Even the Chicago Taylor is about 4K. And with Taylor, you get a lot of control over the product. But due to the valve casing set up, that horn is not for me no matter how much they will work with you. I've played a lot of Taylor instruments in Europe and they are, for me, as good as any Monette I've ever played.

The saga continues. If all else fails, I'll sink money into my Bach Metcedes II which is a fine horn. I got a player with that horn. But I want a new horn. And this Mercedes was pretty banged up before I even got it meaning it had had a lot of work done to it. Pretty badly abused. So it would be sinking money into a horn that someone else had already sunk money into... I don't think it would be wise to try and re fix a horn from 1970. And upon looking at it by a good tech, it could be filled with red rot.

Hi Cornet74, concerning the Carolbrass long model you reported that you...

"went on to TAs site and had a look. Certainly looks good, and the price can't be beat. And maybe that's the problem. The same is true of my Kanstul 703 which looks fantastic, built very well. But it simply disentangle play for me."

I am sorry for your current plight.

But good looks and moderate price in themselves are not indicative of bad nor good performance.

Hopefully Trent will record a clip that might give us some idea of this long cornet's sound. Besides, if Trent nabbed both demo units from the show, there is reason to conjecture that the horn might in fact have desirable qualities beyond its visual appeal and price.

G.

The designation for the long bell model would be 3880-GSS(LB).

We brought one of them back in our hand luggage but the other is shipping to the shop from the show directly. Once that one gets in then we'll do a side-by-side comparison video for everyone. Just a heads up the large bore model is a little bit more expensive. That's a price increase from the factory and not just an arbitrary increase on my own part. I preferred the large bore overall but the ML is also quite nice.

These are going to be a very welcome addition to my roster of the shop and it's going to be a great seller, especially given the price point!

Best,

Trent

Hi Trent, I am delighted that Doug secure two units for NAM... And you nabbed both of them!

I have updated part numbers at the top of the thread.

.460 bore model = CCR-3880-GSS(LB)-L
.465 bore model = CCR-3882-GSS(LB)-L

Also indicated that larger bore variant will be priced little higher.

Looking forward to the upcoming clips.

BTW, IMO the CB Cornet Classic MP shipped with CB Bb cornets is quite nice... I like it quite a bit on the gold brass CCR-7772 triple crooker.

Theses always a market for horns in that price range. Such as the Kanstul 703. I own one. It doesn't work for me. Others love them. And everyone here is at different levels of performance, gigs, practice time et al.

I would suggest before you sink money into your Mercedes II you hold off and try to find one on ebay in better condition. Those are student model horns and there were a LOT of them made. Also, it's my understanding that Bach continued making that same model horn using a different model name/number.

IMO putting money into a student model horn is a big mistake.

I'm reviving this thread to find out if anyone has been playing one of the new CarolBrass long cornets. Specifically I'm interested in the .460 bore one. Anybody?

Hi Richard, your best bet might be to go visit Doug Teeter... He is likely to have a CB long cornet in stock for you to play test... And I know he has in stock a CCR-7772R triple crooker with yellow brass ell... Not sure if he has also a gold or red rass version in stock... But you might be able to get a good idea of the difference by comparing the various metals of some other CB cornets, like the 6882T with twin triggers.

Thanks Guido. Doug's place would be an almost six hour round trip. I was hoping to get some info about the cornet and maybe save myself the drive. Plus I'm still thinking of trading the York and Doug won't do a trade.

Hi Richard... I agree, a 6 hours round trip in a day for play testing a horn is a little bit of a hefty affir!

Have you considered contacting ACB? Trent used to have a pair of CB long cornet in stock... And I remember he advertising one of them on TH not too long ago.... May be he still has one of them.

Besides, Trent or a member of His team should be able to give you a meaningful opinion of the horn.... And, as far as I know, ACB does take trade-ins.

We no longer sell Carol instruments. We are focusing on our own exclusive lines these days.

Cheers,

I am (was) interested in the .460 bore long cornet. Shortly after the original post the long cornet disappeared from the Carol Brass web site.

I'm wondering if the still (or did) exist?

Gary.

The only place I can find mention of it currently is in the catalog for California Music Supply. Their website mentions that they are reorganizing. Not sure what that means. I sent a message to them asking about the cornet. And then there is the Dutch Jazz Standard cornet mentioned in the EU site. The pictures make it look like a shepherds crook.

Hi Richard, I have confirmation that the CB long model cornet is still availble... Although I really do not understand why the carolbrass.com site does not list it.

Carolbrass USA (Doug Teeter) has one in stock... From the model number below, it looks like it might have a gold brass bell:

CCR-3880-GSS(L/Bell) -L    American standard style.

The list of Carol brass US dealers starts at:

http://carolbrass.com/salesnetwork_post.php?i=12

There must be a few who are willing to take a horn in trade... But I suspect that you might fetch a slightly higher price listing your cornet here on TH than trading it in with a dealer.

Thanks Guido. I just got a message from Doug that he does indeed have one in stock. The CB system of model numbers and maintenance of info needs some help.

I could sell my horn for more. We'll see.
