When working on range, I've heard of people taking smaller breaths than usual and using some sort of compression? Can someone explain this in a little more detail? _________________ Jay Wilkerson

Here is a video I did on the topic. I talk about creating compression in the mouth as well as in the lungs. Apparently you cannot create compression in your mouth with tongue position or at your aperture. So please substitute compression with focus when I talk about the tongue. Focus might be a better way to explain the tongue function. I consider it a vocalization this is how I think about it, there are those that have different opinions about compression and what we do with our mouth.
This is a difficult topic for trumpet players as we are not doctors and most don’t study anatomy in-depth. What most of do is describe things in terminology that makes sense to us or describes what we believe we are doing and what is happening. This for most of us is all we can do. Please view this video with this in mind.
All of my videos are meant to provoke thought, If you think they suck I was successful.
The videos of Jim Manley show you what Reinhardt wrote about and many other great teachers teach their students.
Work on those things. IT helps. _________________ Clint 'Pops' McLaughlin
