I've seen lots of impromptu stuff being used. I used to just use my hat. But I realized I don't like wearing hats. Here's a guy playing is butt off with.....

The idea is in fact quite old, I used the glass as a mute as a dixieland tromboneplayer in the sixties and surely did not invent it, see how a glass can also work as a combination of a bell and a mute:
