Novos Baianos was a 1970s Brazilian samba/pop group. So very tasty, catchy tunes, with lots of great mandolin playing and a female singer who's breathy, sultry style made me fall in love--I had no idea what she was saying in Portuguese, but I was sure she was talking directly to me. Time and maturity have changed my perception a bit, but I still think it's great and would like to share it with you.
The first link is to a 70s grainy, black-and-white live performance from the group's secret headquarters, hidden in the jungles of Brasil, where they apparently ran around half naked, playing soccer, smoking dope and playing great music. Love the scat-singing.

The next link is another video of the group doing a tune that Joao Gilberto and others played.

The next link is to my favorite album the group did, starting with that sexy voice that I described above. I later found out that her name is Baby Consuelo. A perfect name to go with that voice.

This was my first exposure to Brazilian music and singing in Portuguese; it opened the door for me to Sergio Mendez, David Byrne's Brazilian anthologies, the Gilbertos and all that Jobim had to offer. |
