I have a student, junior in high school, interested in buying a piccolo trumpet. He has about $500 to spend. He's very good. We're working on Clarke's Debutante at the moment. What are your thoughts on some of the Chinese or otherwise non- Schilke models available in that price range.? If you can provide make and model numbers that would be great. I'm an educator but focus primarily on the Bb trumpet. He asked about Schiller. Thoughts?
Thanks so much.

Personally, I would advise this student to try and save a little more, and try and find a second hand Selmer, Benge, or Yamaha 6000 series over one of the Chinese or Indian models for sure.
Piccolo trumpet can be daunting at first and I suspect most of these instruments would tend to hinder rather than help.
And then there's the question of a good picc mouthpiece....

I'd throw in a second-hand Eterna as a worthy first-picc too.

The chinese ones are pretty poor, the indian ones can barely be classed as musical instruments at all.

100% agree with the recommendation to keep saving

While I'll agree that most Chinese piccolo trumpets are pretty poor are new for valve doubler's piccolo is actually pretty darn incredible. I've attached a couple videos they could check it out. It took us many years basically in development to get a horn that is this good. While it is not as good as my sterling silver belled Adams ($4500) it's pretty great, especially with all of our adjustments we do on these. We believe it to be superior to the older pics on the market (maybe with exception to the 6810s which is a fine horn).

I am planning to order Trent's ACB horn in the next week or so. And although I'm not familiar with piccs specifically, I will try and jump back into this thread and give my feedback.

From all the reading and listening I've done it seems like the doublers horn is a great value. I've put off getting one for a while, but using it for musicals and the occasional church gig would be nice.
