Hi, I recently bought a Conn IP #5 in gold plating and in like new condition. I got it from a gentleman who ''give'' it to me for $20...I was almost shy to buy it at this price.
Well, I got it mainly cause I was curious of how it sounds. I have a Conn #4 that I like pretty much.
But when I tried it with my Committee Kenosha, the sound was gorgeous rich with a crisp and clear articulation. The mix between the two is really awesome.
The only problem I have with the piece is the cup who is rather small to me. It causes some endurance issues. I'll probably get used to it, but I'm wondering if I could find the same configuration but with a larger rim. I didn't find a lot of infos about Conn #5 specs.
Is it possible to find a similar piece from another maker?
Thanks for any input! _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other

Hi.
Doug M. alias Lipshurt is the guy to talk to. He made me a mouthpiece based
on a conn 4. Works great! _________________ A whole lot of vintage horns. |

Yeah! Finally got some help!
Many thanks. I'll get in touch with him.
Just curious, what are the ''improvements'' he made for you? _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other

The Conn 4 was a bit small. But we kept the same bowlshape. Then he made the rim just a touch thinner. Now I play both trumpets and cornets with the same mouthpiece. And all for a very reasonable cost😉.

Thanks a lot again. I have a bunch of mouthpieces here and the Conn 5 makes my Leblanc Committee sound VERY close to the original Committee.
That's curious cause I was sure it would sound closer, better and richer with a deeper cup...!! _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other

And overall, one question: is it possible that I'll never feel comfortable with the mouthpiece due to lips shape, or will I get used to it over time?
I'm used to play on .660 ID cups or so... the Conn 5 is .646; not a huge difference. Maybe the inside cup edges are too sharp for me...??!! _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other

I played the Conn 4 for 'about 8 years and never really adopted to it. Most of the time it was fine but some struggle with the small feel. I guess it's all personally. I used the original straight shrank conn 4 without the rim just because I play on various old Conn horns most of the time. The new piece that's Doug made me works great on almost all my horns except a 1952 28B and a Selmer Grand Prix from 1932. I still use the Conn 4 on the 28B and a Selmer 3special on the Selmer. I never really get my **** together with the Conn 5 or the Constellation pieces. 😉 _________________ A whole lot of vintage horns. |

The Conn 5 is a narrow, shallow mouthpiece. It came standard with the 6B trumpet, and that's why I have one. It's too small for me, though... I'd guess the best alternative if you want to stick with vintage Conn mouthpieces is something in the Connstellation line. Have a look at this:

Hey Dale, sorry I see your post now...
After a few weeks I stiil try to get comfortable with this damn Conn 5 but I think it's hopeless. I can't use to it.
I play the piece for 5 minutes and I feel like a player with 2 months of experience. Then I take any other and it's a whole different story.
It's a shame cause what a sound!! _________________ The least we can do is wave to each other
