Incredible.

I sure wish first gen, stereo versions of these old performances by Doc were available.

Of all the people who have ever picked up the horn, the fates bestowed this one guy with his unique skills on the instrument.

meh...Malaguana is, to me, one of the most boringly repetitive songs ever written. I could not wait for the bows music to stop.

Yes, he sounds great - how many can play as fat a low F# and then end on the dubba D? at the END of a concert? - and the cadenza is pure Doc.

But for shear display of fearlessness of the trumpet and that sound that makes Doc "Doc" - this is one of the best, along with just about everything from the Tonight Show Big Band albums.

A little side note - fairly sure that his daughter (Nancy?) is one of the backup singers. I think she was also with him in the early 70s when his traveling show included the "Now Generation Brass."

A lot of people have seen the quote from Doc where I think he gives Maynard a little too much credit and saying that Maynard could have been any kind of trumpet player he wanted, etc. I think Doc was being all too kind and humble by saying that because I just don't see this kind of deadly accurate playing with impeccable sound and articulation ever coming out of Maynard.

No one can match Doc. No one.

Agree with Tim. And this Claude Smith piece is magnificent.

Most only know Maynard's playing from his later years. Let's face it, he had slipped horribly as time wore on. The first time I heard Maynard live he was in his early 40's and he still had it. It was almost frightening. The only other time I had felt that way was after hearing Cat Anderson in person. There was electricity in the air when they played.
I think Doc was referring to the Maynard he knew from their days in Charlie Barnett's Band.
As time passed Doc stayed at the top of his game while Maynard didn't. Maynard was on the road right to the end of his life. Doc had the Tonight Show gig and slept in his own bed most nights. He was able to maintain a regular practice schedule.
Doc has never been a jazz player in my opinion. Arnie Lawrence, who was part of the sax section in the Tonight Show Band during the New York years told me that Doc's jazz solos were actually written out for him. That said, you still have to be able to play what was written.
Maynard was a good jazz player in his younger days. The recording with Dinah Washington, Clifford and Clark Terry shows that. Maynard more than held his own.
Doc is still a beast on the horn at 90.

You could have pushed the stop button - lol.

I suppose next you're going to say that the Jeopardy theme just doesn't have any real meat as a composition.

~shrug~ I don't have any objection to the melody - it definitely makes a good vehicle for Doc to show off the strident bravura he could do like no one else. The guitarist and drummer are pretty kickass as well.

Yes, that's his daughter Nancy. She can also be seen on the video of Doc playing Celebration Suite.
