I know this is a pretty vague question but what is a good all around mouthpiece ? I play in church , concert band , jazz , and usually at least 1 high school musical a year and want to just use a good all around mouthpiece for all the playing I do

Thats realky hard to say. I guess whatever you are comfortqble on and depends on what fits you. I would say something like a 3b, 3c, 5b, 5c or something similar would be fine, but without seeing you play and your face qnd su h there is no telling. Tbere are just so many mouthpieces out there and most middle of the road like these would work well for most genres.

Reeves 42M is a excellent choice but a little expensive for a young student , check ebay and market place for a used one.

All four of those are fine all-around mouthpieces. Methinks you may be asking the wrong question.

What problem are you trying to solve?

For all around playing, the Bach 5C works best for me. But that is just me. It wouldn't necessarily work for the OP.

I'm not sure, but a good all-around shoe size is 10 1/2.

What are you going to play if they all sell immediately?

I have a complete set of Marcinkiewicz Claude Gordon Personals. Trumpet, Cornet and Flugelhorn. Plus a trumpet and cornet of the same with opened up bores. Just saying in case you want to try something different.

Reeves 43C
Curry 3C.
Curry 5C

With the Curry pieces, especially the 5C since it is a bit deeper, you would probably need a second shallower mouthpiece for jazz and the musical (if it's a heavy book), meaning you'd need perhaps a Curry 5C and a Curry 5M or 5 Star, or a Curry 3C. along with a 3M. or 3 Star.. This rules the Currys out if you really want just one mouthpiece (unless you find you can "do it all" on the 3C., which is quite possible).

The 43C on the other hand could definitely do it all - there's something almost magical about the Reeves C and M cups - they are very flexible - one can play nice and warm in the lower and mid registers on them, but they totally light up in the upper register. Money wise though, you can buy 2 or 3 Curry mouthpieces for the price of one Reeves mouthpiece.

Best wishes,

John Mohan

My question would be what was it about those mouthpieces that didn't really do it for you?

If you are in HS, I'd tend to think that a Curry 3C would probably be a nice option. It's a bit (and I mean just a little bit - I used it for over a year) on the bright side for me for how I wanted to use it - as a legit mouthpiece - but that brightness would make it a good all around piece for you.

I don't have much experience with the GR mouthpieces, but the 66S that I tried as a lead piece was a bit too narrow. I tried using a 5C once, and I really liked my sound when I was using it, but at that point in my playing career, my accuracy was really hit or miss with it. Like seriously - I was either on the money, or I missed entirely.

But yeah - Curry 3C. (dot) In my opinion it's a significant improvement over the Bach 3C, and costs about the same.

FWIW, I never liked Bach Megatone mouthpieces - they just didn't feel right to me.

You're all wasting ur breath!!! The OP just joined TH 3 days ago...got his 5 posts...and listed his 4 pieces in the MP. He's in the wind now!! People like this REALLY irritate me as many of you took time out of ur day to give him good, solid advice. Takes all kinds I guess.

This one got by me - I feel so used.

Well, maybe the guy will continue to participate here (especially when he finds that sellers with 5 posts and a TH membership longevity measured in hours tend not to attract offers in the Marketplace).

Speaking of the Marketplace, I wish that Schilke E3L-4 that's been for sale there for a while would hurry up and sell. It's down to just $2600 and I think that's a bargain (it is certainly a lot less than I will be listing mine for if and when I place a marketplace ad for it). Of course, mine is in absolutely new condition - I just practiced on it for a few months prior to my CSO audition and then put it away. It's only been out every 4 weeks to have its valves oiled and slides greased as needed.

Perhaps the reason that nice looking E3L-4 currently in the Marketplace hasn't sold yet is because (wait for it... wait for it...) the seller has exactly: 5 posts on the TH!

Cheers,

John Mohan

Maybe the requirements should be upped for the marketplace for selling to prevent stuff like this. Maybe a time requirement as well as an upped post count. I know many forums I am a member of require a minimum of 90 days and at least 10-30 real posts of contributing before you can sell.
